  1. For the "non purist" fly fishing from a boat at Taneycomo it's hard to beat a brown 100oz marabous jig about 6' under a foam strike indicator. Other colors work well too. The shops and resorts down there will have what you need. Cheap and effective. That's assuming the water isn't ripping. Have fun.
  2. Fly rod would have been a blast with those.
  3. Wading, floating or boating... I think I'd do the first runs during the day.
  4. I never saw the point in hailing butt on Tany. It's not that big that it's really required. Slow down and enjoy the ride.
  5. I'm up here in KS. Every spring I bank fish the walleye run that happens at our manmade corp lakes in the spring when the walleye try to spawn on the dams. I was having a particularly good few nights throwing a Shad X Rap when they first came out. Lost the lure in the rocks which happens all too often. Next night I went back out armed with a couple identical new X raps. First few cast I get hung up again. Work it lose and reel in to find the back treble hook of my new lure somehow went exactly threw the front eyelet of the lure I lost the night prior. Impossible to happen... but it did.
  6. For a positive thought... you could be in Boston.
  7. Make sure you are equipped with a good GPS and paper map as back up. Pretty easy lake to get turned around on for a first timer... Been there and did it
  8. <<<< Caught with the help of a guide but it sure was fun.
  9. Nice fish guys!!!
  10. Yep. Not to mention how much easier it is to cast with water behind you vs ground/grass/trees. I fished and absolute awesome lake in CO. No waders that day. Shore fished with about 4' tall grass behind me. That was a fly loosing proposition... but we caught some nice trout.
  11. Nice thing about Tany is it's pretty easy to fish. Motor up to fall creek and just drift with the current back down. Keep drifting until you stop catching fish and repeat. Worms... Power Bait... jigs... they all catch fish. If you're lucky someone in your group will hook a big one.
  12. It may go against your desire to buy more gear but you could always take your "cheapy" flyrod and put a small spinning reel on it... It'll work better then you may think.
  13. Just bite the bullet and get yourself a fly rod and reel. You don' have to spend a ton to get into it (but you can spend as much as you want after). I learned how to fly fish with an old hand me down rig on Tany doing the jig and float method. It's a blast and while I don't consider myself a hard core fly fisherman I alway have some fly gear with me just about any time I'm near water. 5w 8' two piece rod and you can catch about anything you might run into around the midwest.
  14. Nice job on the walleye Chris!!! Some of the best walleye fishing I have had is when it's windy a nasty out. They love the wind.
  15. Sounds like a lot of fun F&F. I do some duck hunting up here in KS but really prefer fishing. Fishing and having a shot at some waterfowl sounds about like a perfect day!
  16. Walleye on a fly... that cracks me up. So how do you go about killing geese when you're fishing? I'd like to hear how that works! You just shooting local geese. Not judging... just askin'.
  17. On one of my few fly fishing trips to CO all we used was size 20 and 22 flies… only way you could catch a fish. That was about the most frustrating fishing trip I ever took. Just tying those darn things on is hard enough… let alone catch and bring in a trout on them. I’ll leave the micro gear to those able to use it.
  18. We learned this method from the old (about three owners ago) owner of what now is Trout Hollow Resort. We use to keep track of how many trout we boated. It wasn't unusual for a guy to catch close to a hundred trout over a weekend... fun stuff and never a gut hooked fish.
  19. This technique is hardly a secret. First time I ever put a fly rod in my hand was on Tanycomo with a foam float and a brown 100th oz jig 5' below it (boat fishing)... that was probably 25 years ago. I've successfully used that same rig many other places and always referred to it as a "Tanycomo rig". Great and easy way to catch a lot of trout... and other species. I don't get to Tanycomo much these days (thanks kids) but it's still my favorite method to use there if the conditions are favorable. If you've never picked up a fly rod this is a great way to learn. Like Phil said... just watch the float. Nice write up!
  20. That really IS the same fish. Pretty cool!!!
  21. I have to agree with the brood stock release... shouldn't be a record in my book. We had two "state record" trout caught out of the same stocked lake here in KS this year. If I recall they were caught the same week as well. Fish are stocked and will not make it through the summer and someone catches them and its a "record"... kind of silly if you ask me.
  22. Interesting responses. I'm also from Kansas. Only been to Beaver a handfull of times but except for one early spring trip all others have been in late summer... August. Tough fishing for us as well. Maybe a fall trip is on order for me too.
  23. You guys will do fine with worms and power bait on a drift rig. Hot drift bait for us last time I was there were the little Power Bait minnows... black and white and maybe 2" long. My buddy had a pack of them and was out fishing me 2 to 1 with them. If you have fly gear bring it. If water is running slow fly fishing on the drift is a blast and REALLY easy... it'd borderline not fly fishing. 100oz jig (or this Trout Magnet we have been reading about here) 5' under a little float. Flip the rig out there and let it drift along with you and wait for float to go down. If the conditions are right you'll catch a LOT of trout with that rig. Have fun!
  24. I caught a few in CO including a 6" native Greenback Cutthroat. Prettiest fish I've ever seen.
  25. What the heck is a trout magnet?
