I rarely tell people that their opinions are invalid, as I usually try to see both sides, but sir, your opinions are invalid and you should keep comments like this to yourself. If that was your child who died in the river you would be highly offended having someone stating that your child was stupid. Yes, kids do stupid things, but I am sure we have all done things in our life that was less than intelligent. Criticism from a grown man should show at least some compassion for the families that are grieving, and the fact that someone lost a child, or in the alternative a father. The gene pool thinning and Social Darwinism are inapplicable to these situations; I do not even see how you could post something so insensitive. Actually, I am embarrassed that you post on this forum with this type of worldview. Now that I am through venting, my thoughts go to those families who lost a loved one on the river.

I second that, both the sculpin and the bait part. I hired a guide in Yellowstone, and he talked about being a kid and using those as bait. That's illegal in Montana, no clue whether its legal down here. But he said he caught his biggest fishing using sculpins as bait.

Never been able to get down their for a brown run at Taney, but this year I might be able to. I was wondering what the chances were for a brown run this year with the generation being how it was this summer. I would appreciate any info. Thanks

gotmuddy: I don't think I understand your logic. Listen, smallmouth aren't stocked, and while I fish for them only a couple of times a year you won't find a single post about my trips on this forum. This has nothing to do my fishing skill, and I have the photos and everything else to go with it. I fish for solitude, unless I go to a trout park where you'll find me hawg hunting. However gotmuddy, you have to realize that I, nor anyone else on this forum are obligated to share with you any information regarding fishing. I will post my information on trout parks and taney, but you have to realize that these areas differ materially from smallmouth in Missouri which are native. If I never saw a posting on blue ribbon trout stream, I would be happy. And I think a lot of smallmouth anglers share this feeling, however I can't state their opinions for them. I agree a lot with Eric on this point. However, while Blue ribbon streams have their protections, they don't differ too much from that of some Smallmouth streams. I still think enforcement is the answer to that problem but I know that this is not the view of everyone. Bottom line is this, you want to share information on fishing then great. If you want other people to share their info and spots, don't get your panties in a twist if they don't. Tight lines

I would think we do not notice emergency response and law enforcement until we actually need them. I interned at a police department a couple of years ago and went on numerous ride alongs. Their job is hell for 15 minutes and boring for the next 45, repeat 8 to 12 times a day and call it a night. Asking what the use of a park ranger is begs the question of whether you have had an emergency inside one of the parks. Have you ever reported poaching inside the park? Without rangers who would you go to? Ever had/witnessed a fight? Hopefully not, but without a ranger system you would be relying on the police/sheriffs department who may be ten to 15 minutes away. These situations represent the tip of the iceberg. To me, it should be taken as a good thing that Park Rangers appear inactive. If they were continuously active then I do not know if I would go to a state park for fear of safety. Park Rangers have their use but they, just as other law enforcement agencies, respond to situations of need. Just my 2cents.

Maybe Whiteman in Warrensburg? I used to see them all the time when I was at CMSU. I've also seen them in KC. Cool planes though, would hate to seem them through the scope of a tank.

I tell you, the Black Bears doesn't scare me as their generally timid, but the idea of Mountain Lions does. A golf course in the KC area has been claiming for years that they have been seeing Mountain Lion prints in the bunkers in the morning. The idea of being stalked is creepy.

Warm Water Fly Fishing

Nice 'gills there flytyer. My favorite warm water fly has to be a red fox squirrel nymph size 8 to 12 with a gold bead and rubber legs. The panfish in the ponds I fish love them. Either that or a size 10 peacock soft hackle. It seems with the cloudy water of KC ponds that size matters. The bigger the better within reason. However, during the evening and on cloudy days an Adams is effective. Cheers -
I'm looking for 12 people to participate in a midge swap. I haven't hosted a swap on this site before but I have on other sites. No specific materials must be used, so long as you consider these flies to be midges. The first 12 people to post "I'm in" get to participate. To participate, you must tie up one dozen flies, make 12 recipe cards for the fly pattern that you tied and mail them to me by the 7th of October along with a postage paid envelope so I can return your new flies to you. Anything can work well there. Something in the 8-10 size range will work well. PMX and Stimulators work well. I was fishing with a hopper pattern that I hadn't tied, I think it was a Rainy's pattern. Grand hoppers work well. I was noticing that I had looks from bigger fish from the larger hopper and more strikes from the smaller one(size 12) I was wondering if anyone had any luck on nymphs at bennett lately. -
Went down on Monday arrived at 9:30. The stream was in great shape with active fish. I have been bashing Bennett lately and this was my first time down in about a year. The stream was fishin as well as I can remember. Light Cahills, Tan Caddis and Grasshoppers where the top dry flies for me. I also had cgood luck stripping Cracklebacks and small streamers. The weather was hot but the fishing was worth it. Tried a dropper off of the Grasshopper but had no luck with it. I had some real fun with a huge hopper. I would get some big fish up to look at it but little luck with it. The fish were big and healthy.

Eric, with more people fishing, you are likley to have more people who care about an area. Why do you care about smallmouths? Because you love the sport of fishing for them I would assume. Otherwise why bother? Yes, there are "meathunters" but I was more or less refering to people who are law abiding citizens, given the fact that I spent a bit of my post bashing poachers. My problem, and it has been this way for a while, is when people on this forum use their personal opinions and beliefs to criticize others who are within the law. There is no need for that type of behavior. I can enjoy the stream just as much as a guy that is legally bait fishing. This isn't a country club we are talking about and there needs to be areas where anyone can fish. Not everyone can strip a streamers or put a good drift on a dry fly. Some people have never been taught how to fly fish or spin fish for that matter, but these people enjoy fishing none the less and the people are by no means less of an individual than either you or I. Long story short, if you have a problem with the law then do something to get it changed but don't ride your high horse and feel holier than though because you don't fish with bait. -

I almost strictly fly fish. Outside of taking my daughter fishing, I cannot remember the last time I bought bait. However, if a person is fishing legally with bait, I don't see a problem with it. Yes, the mortality rate is probably higher, but those streams are no more mine than the persons down the street. Two things which bother me more than anything: Poaching and criticism. Poaching has no excuse and poachers are no friends of mine. However, people who turn their nose up at people because they fish with a worm are almost as bad. Yes, we all want to conserve what we have, but we might face problems with our sport if we shut out a group of people. Conservations best friend is the growth of the sport. The more people who fish legally directly equates with the amount of people who care for our streams and lakes. -
I think I'm going to the Little Blue tomorrow in search for carp. But again, it's hit and miss. I know that Longview has a ton of Carp. They're big too. I hooked into one a couple of years ago that was an easy 18-20. No kidding, it ruined my medium weight reel.

I just got back from Yellowstone a couple of weeks ago. It was an absolute pleasure to fish. Beautiful water and great hatches. I fished the Gallatin, Madison in the evenings, the Gibbon and Soda Butte Creek. Soda Butte was by far the prettiest in my opinion. Biggest fish was a 21' Mountain Whitefish. Yellowstone has a lot of regulations, but I wouldn't mind seeing Missouri pick up two of them. The ban on lead is something that MDC should consider and it puzzles me why the it hasn't been established for all of the creeks. The other would be to require basrbless hooks on the Blue Ribbon Trout streams and C&R Areas. Didn't get attacked by bears but a man in the Tetons was killed by a Grizzly that was sedated while I was there. I did see a grizzly, a bull moose, bull elk and Bison. An awesome area that I hope to return to in the next couple of years.

I was recently looking at the 2005 TU 100 Best Trout Streams and noticed that Crane was no longer on the list. I was dissapointed as I have always loved this creek and Crane was on the list in 1999. I recently went down there and the creek was in great shape. However, I wasn't fly fishing when the last edition was published in 1999. Does anyone notice any differences? Or has Crane just lost the attention of the publishers? I would love to here some comments. I'm going down again next week and hope to bring my camera with me this time.

Capable of transporting commerce as stated by Delcour. However, I would really caution anyone from just going up any stream that appears navigable. A person may never use deadly force to protect property, but I think that a lot of people have a certain misconception that shooting at people on your property is justified. This topic must be brought up on this forum at least once a year. However there is no clear answer as to what defines navigable. The case, Elder v. Delcour, describe illustrations of navigability but does not define navigability beyond a stream that is capable of transporting commerce. I wouldn't advise people to park at a bridge and just start walking up any creek. A person may not own the water but they can own the bottom of the streambed, nad unless the stream is navigable you would be tresspassing. Be careful. It is not a good idea to play do it yourself lawyer.

Sorry about getting to this so late. I love soccer and grew up playing it. Todays game was one of those games I'll tell my kids about. My house nearly exploded when Donovan scored in the 92' minute. The World Cup is awesome to go to. I went in 94' and although I was only 9 I can still remember alot of what happened. Ollie, I think alot of Americans see soccer as boring because they didn't grow up with it, the US is not dominant in this sport and the MLS, while fun and improving, is not a top-notch league.

Yes Eric, trout do die. I suppose that comes with fishing. However, I have always seen the trout stamp as a way of contributing back to the MDC for the fish that you have harvested. If the trout stamp has more impact than this, make it mandatory to fish for trout. It would make a lot more sense. Eric, how is Ness not paying for his resource in which he is using? Frankly, I fail to see how Ness is not contributing. Commerce is contributed every time an out of state resident comes down to a trout stream in MO, even if he only purchase a tank of gas. .

Ollie, the way I have understood the law is that you only have to purchase a trout stamp if you: 1)Keep trout, or 2). Fish above 64(?) Highway on Lake Taneycomo. Eric,my problem is that I don't keep fish. I do buy my trout stamp, but I just don't see the reasoning why and it is not because of the 7 dollars either. I know that there is more that goes into sustaining a trout stream than restocking, but look, I would have to bet (with a total lack of knowledge other than common sense) the majority of all of the trout stamp revenue is used to fund hatcheries. Not knocking the program, but I would think that alot of the work on these streams comes from stream teams such as the one that Ollie created for Hickory. Just my views. Looks like I am going to have to keep purchasing the tag as I like to fish Taney.

I don't think being responsible for a trout’s death is the reason a person has to buy a trout stamp. And causing a trout to die is not a guarantee that the trout will come home with you. Its illegal to keep a 17' trout from a blue ribbon stream one way or the other. I buy one, but only to fish Taney. If I didn't have to buy one to fish Taney then I wouldn't purchase one. The way I see it, I don't owe the MDC anything as long as I purchase my license and catch and release.

Scuds and midges would be an easy tie. You also said you like to fish wooly buggers and those are simple ties as well. I think that dropping a few bucks and getting a vise, some hooks and some materials would be a worthwile investment.

Man poaching drives me bonkers. Why would one want to target Crane? Out of all the streams in Missouri Crane would strike me as the least likely to produce enough big fish for a dinner table. What an idiot.

The thing I don't understand is that I have heard that Muskie fishing is usually tough on a good day. This guy is nuts. I'm just going to start blaming random people that I don't persoally know about my tough fishing days from now on Its actually sad to see someone say these things. I've been on quite a few trips were I didn't catch what I had set out to catch, but that is part of fishing. Live and learn.
