Are there trout in Capps?

I'm headed down to Arkansas on next Wednesday and plan to fish my way down from KC on Tuesday and Wednesday. Depending on generation, we'll stop by Tanney, but also throught I'd try Capps. Tried it last year about this time of year and only caught a sucker. The water's beautiful and fun to fish from the mill down to the bridge, but I didn't see a single trout. Do they stock in mid winter?

Yes, they do stock up until like March or April, but I couldn't tell you right at the moment if they have stocked recently.

The best fishing is further downstream. You can park near the mill, or there is another bridge (plenty of parking) about a mile further downstream. The best places to fish are the deep pools between the two bridges. Although this section of river isn't as pretty, you can catch trout year round.

I got out yesterday for a couple of hours and went on down to the Capps. Weather was nothing less than spectacular, but the fishing wasn't as good. Water is REALLY low. Wouldn't surprise me if they started draining the mill pond anytime soon. There is soooo much moss in the pond it is choking out anything in there. I did manage to catch two greenies and about 5 g-eyes. I talked to someone today at work that said his freind caught about a dozen down there last weekend. If he did then they were small. I was fishing to a pod that the biggest one I saw was only around 8". Nothing I would brag about.I also have a sneaking suspicion my bosses friend probably kept all of them too. :(

Ollie,

I know this is a Capps creek discussion but have you fished Hickory Creek in Neosho lately? I have twice with no luck. Since the season opened I have not caught anything out of there except a few suckers. I also heard rumors that the City of Neosho was going to make that park into a Roaring River type trout area. Have you heard anything about this?

Yes, the discussion has come up several times about it being like "RR", but not sure how they will do that. City still owns the park and most of the access, don't think they will give it up that easy to the state. I'm not sure if the hatchery has stocked anything for awhile. I do know the city has gone out of its way to make the park more acessible and more attractive to families for like picnics and playground equipment, so who knows about the "RR" theme.

I've fished Capps creek for years and have had no trouble catching fish there the creek is harder to fish than most think unless you catch it right after they have stocked it,then the fishing is pretty easy for a few day's until the locals fish them out,I fished the other day and caught and released 12 fish 3/29/06.the wind was terrible so had to fish a short line i use a 3 wt rod with 7x tippets,For me the only fly that produces constant is a 16 Red butt, and a 18 Blue wing olive wet fly.The other day i caught a 17 inch Rainbow on the BWO, He had been in there awhile cause his color was Brilliant what a fight took me all over the creek :) with 7x could not put to much pressure on him at first i thought i had hooked into a large brown, and that brings me to the Brown trout for the past two years i have not caught one??? The bottom line is i fish Capps creek like i would Crane creek and it works for me, Now to Hickory Creek anything i do there is for NOT..i have not caught a fish there have seen a few,I wont go back until they get it working how ever they plan on doing that.?
