esox niger Posted August 14, 2008 Author Posted August 14, 2008 I've caught em. And they were big. Go to the Big Muddy below Rend Lake spillway or Carlisle or Kinkade. Click on the link below, I'm the guy with one on. It's nasty, muddy and smelly but they pull like a bull. I use a 9 weight and clousers. Haven't been there this year so I can't comment on what's up. Ask away and I'll try and answer your questions. http://www.ozarkchronicles.com/forums/view...a106a01166320f4 I've hooked Buffs that I couldn't turn around with a nine weight. Had to break em off or lose my flyline. SIO3 Size hook ...length of fly , sparce or full., any flash. Missouriflies.com Online Carp Fly Store
Members OzarkKid07 Posted October 28, 2008 Members Posted October 28, 2008 My mom and dad and me went fishing below the dam at Carlyle lake in Illinois and caught these Asian carp. Hers was about 35 pounds and mine was around 38. I caught mine on an ultra light with 6 pound test line as I was fishing for whites. Collectively almost 2 hours fight time because hers was caught in the dorsal fin. Good times, although these fish are a pestilence. Michael J. Members OzarkKid07 Posted October 29, 2008 Members Posted October 29, 2008 Might anyone by chance know the world record Asian carp? Not that I think we were anywhere close, but it'd be cool to tell my mom she was in the running. Maybe a state record would be more achievable. Michael J. Wayne SW/MO Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 Might anyone by chance know the world record Asian carp? Not that I think we were anywhere close, but it'd be cool to tell my mom she was in the running. Maybe a state record would be more achievable. I doubt there are any records being kept. The fact they can't be caught on bait of some kind or fish for and caught consistently, will probably mean they will never be. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted October 29, 2008 Posted October 29, 2008 I've posted this link before. Me and a couple St. Louis guys have caught em pretty good with fly rods below spillways in IL. They hit it hard and pull like a bull. We used clousers and the more we went the harder they were to catch. We could still see them but they wouldn't bite. If you read the thread you'll see where guys went and got skunked. We used to catch real nice hybrids out of those areas but not anymore. Asian's pushed em out. Even the locals said they no longer catch hybrids in there. Take a look. We had days of twenty a piece and some over 3 feet long. http://www.ozarkchronicles.com/forums/view...5acc87e81e4d82f SIO3
Members OzarkKid07 Posted October 30, 2008 Members Posted October 30, 2008 I caught these fish on rooster tails over a 3 days period. I posted these two because they were the largest. I actually caught one on a jointed silver Rapala, but it tore the heck out of it. All were caught in the mouth except my mom's which was on a silver Johnson's spoon in the dorsal fin. I read that link that was posted in the last message and didn't see what spillways they were in. Any idea? Also, having never caught fish this big, I noticed that if my line was too tough and my rod too heavy that my hooks just straightened out, but on light tackle I could land them. Any thoughts there? snagged in outlet 3 Posted October 30, 2008 Posted October 30, 2008 It's Rend Lake spillway. We bulldogged em with 9 weight fly rods and saltwater flies. We hooked fish in there so big we had to break them off for fear of losing our rigs. Fly lines are expensive. We saw some of the beasts and they were either very large buffalo or flatheads. SIO3
strangercreek Posted October 31, 2008 Posted October 31, 2008 Ok, time for me to stick a reel on my 5/6 Redington and have some fun on the Wakarusa. You all have me wanting to catch some darn carp, and cats. Where do you access the Wakarusa, above or below Clinton?
MoCarp Posted November 3, 2008 Posted November 3, 2008 tail water conditions are ripe for "snagging" even if they are caught in the head, I can't tell you how many spoonbill I have caught in the jaw while jigging below Truman dam...do I think they fed on my jig? NOPE my jig hit them or vise versa...I think the same thing goes on with fly fishing fast strip strip strip and vola..the physics of big fish heading into current and turning down stream gives an illusion of more legit jaw/head mouth hooked fish MONKEYS? what monkeys?
snagged in outlet 3 Posted November 4, 2008 Posted November 4, 2008 I can not disagree with you MoCarp. Either way they are still mouth-hooked and, they are considered invasive. The state of IL is paying to have them removed via netting. I might as well help out for free. BTW, big mouth buffalo are much harder to land than an asian. I'm talking 9 foot, 9 weight, with a ten foot section tapered down to 15 pound tippet of flourocarbon. SIO3
