Chief Grey Bear
Chief: Do deer congragate, conspire and agree to spread out equally all over the state? I haven't heard about this. I bet Jo Buck really enjoys the plot of land he agreed to in downtown Kansas City where the Convention Center is. And all the other deer who get a lovely Walmart or a Parking lot. Truth is there are too many deer and in some areas of extreme concentration they are even damaging crops, cars and trucks over and over causing property damage and injuring people. Seasons have been extened by your beloved MDC to further control populations and they are currently considering added measures to add further control. "Is" is Is and "Crisis" is Crisis. Members tadman
I just call 'em like I see'em Chief. And that one is an easy one. If my math was anywhere near correct and if not I am sure I will be corrected by the professor, it should be about .0227xxxxxxx deer per acre. I wonder how the number of livestock per acre compares? bigredbirdfan
I don't know where you fellas live but my point is of the square miles that that you two are so proud to call habitat is uninhabitable to deer. Like, um, the whole city of Springfield, Kansas City...St. Louis you get my point. So come back for a math lesson whenever you can provide a real number of habitable acres in Missouri. Documentation will get extra credit .
Members tadman
You sure are an edgy one there young feller. We can all see that your point is on top of your head. Mine is at the end of my boot. Do you to get my point? I think, and I am in no way speaking for him, his point was that he doesn't think there is a deer "crisis" in the state of Missouri. I know I have never in all my years heard of a deer "crisis" in this state. And I have been here for many, many years. Why don't you provide some documentation stating that we have a "crisis"? soggyfeet
Look on the side of the road sometime? How many deer do you see or blood spatters on the highway that take up a whole lane for twenty yds? I dont belive these come from opossums. I dont belive there is a crisis but I do think that there are too many deer in Mo at this time. I'm not as conceerned with crop damage as I'm not a farmer but I am concerned with hitting one on the road. I myself have almost hit 7 in the last two months alone. Granted it is getting into the rut season but with the ones I'm almost hitting and the ones I see already hit that tells me there are too many. I wont hardly let my wife drive at night with the kids in her car because I'm affraid she will hit one. Hiting a deer in my truck would do serious damage but it would total my wifes car and who knows what to her and the kids. Brian

Are there too many deer...or too many cars, going too fast for the conditions ? Hell, if there were only 3 deer in the whole state I'd betcha two of them would eventually get hit by a vehicle. Watching out for animals, whether it be a deer, a coon dog, an escaped herd of cattle or goats, or Bigfoot is all part of driving outside of the city limits. I don't intend to be a smart-butt, but, If you've almost hit 7 deer in 2 months then you should be driving at what YOU PERSONALLY FEEL is a safe speed, instead of what the black and white sign says you are allowed to. You live in Missouri where there are sharp curves, lots of hills and a "HEALTHY" deer population..... That's a blessing, not a "crisis". Seatbelts and airbags are great, but don't forget that the most important piece of safety equipment in your vehicle is right between your ears. jdmidwest
Urban deer are a "problem" not really a crisis. They congregate inside city limits, eat gardens and shrubs, and hit cars. There are bowhunters that thin these herds in certain areas and, here locally in Cape Girardeau, there has been talk of a season to thin some of the herds here. Farmers have problems with deer populations, MDC works with the farmers to allow bonus tags to thin herds in certain locations to help with crop damage. I don't think populations in this state have gotten to the point of any problems statewide. Insurance companies would like to see less deer. Mine is at the end of my boot. I love it when discourse gets personal. Are you trying to insult my intelligence by calling me a dunce? You have made your point oh ancient one. Do you and Cheif believe that while they are screwing 75,000 landowners with new tag fees resulting in 1.5 to 2 million dollars they would publish any reports that indicate deer population at near crisis? Ask my co-worker who has hit 3 deer over the last year and his son who totaled a vehicle over deer what they think. The MDC manages all species at near perfect levels right? The areas that these deer were almost hit were in areas that they are hit all the time and I was traveling at a lower speed because of the history of these areas. I think if I was driving at the posted speed limit a few would have been hit. I have the most problem around Longview Lake area on Raytown rd(this is in the KC area). As far as I know there is no hunting of any kind in this area. Some places have special hunts but I have never heard of of such hunts in this area. Maybe they think the cars are takeing care of the herd and that is good enough. Brian

I am not insulting your intelligence, if you have any, you are. I see you are speaking for 75,000 land owners again. Well you might want to make that 74,998. Well, you may want to widdle that down some more. I know for sure that I and other family members and our friends, do not feel that way. Plus you would be the last feller I would ask to do any talking for me. If I need someone to do some talkng for me, I am gonna get someone who know what they are yapping about. Now where is that documentation at that you are so high on? You keep yapping yer facts but you don't show where ya get it? Tell yer friend to pay more attention. I have been driving for long time now and have yet to hit a deer. Maybe I ain't in such a hurry as you younguns.
