timsfly Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Phil is right, in my week of fishing in AK, I don't remember ever hooking a fish outside the mouth, except the dang sockeye that were always in the way, and we snagged them the right way, in the back and in the tail, and we caught a fair amount of them in the inside of the mouth also. I don't think I ever saw a snagged fish when using the beads, always inside the mouth. Same at the park, almost all in the mouth, you can't help but snag one now and again, but I don't think I ever caught one on the outside of the mouth. Jeremy Hunt Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 Same here, most of everything I've hooked has been inside the mouth. Accept the drift.....<>>><flysandguides.comVisit my blog
fishinwrench Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 "there are quite a few guides in AK who don't like beads... but we out fish them everytime." out fish ? LOL Naw, I'm not gonna go there. To each their own. A grass waving dry fly purist would probably hock-a-loogey on ME for swingin' muddlers, so who am I to say what's fishing and what isn't.
twosets Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I remember one time many years ago when Phil tried to convince me to peg a bead above a hook and fish it. I did not know him that well and thought that he was maybe trying to pull my leg. I guess I should have given it a try, but I definately will give it a go the next time I am on Tany. Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted December 19, 2008 Root Admin Posted December 19, 2008 Clarify- Out fish- Those that would fish a conventional yarn egg verses a bead- no comparison. I posted a pic somewhere on the forum where I'm holding a handful of real salmon eggs with one bead in the mix- you can't tell the difference. Neither can trout and char in AK. I caught and released one rainbow 4 times this fall on Idavain Creek. He never refused it. Problem using them for most trout here- they don't make them small enough. 6mm is the smallest troutbead makes. Rainbow eggs are smaller. But they do take these beads, just not like trout taking sockeye and king eggs in AK.
vanven Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I did some research and found a video on how to use them.... -Jerod
duckydoty Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 This thread started as one person asking the opinion on wether trout beads would be effective on Taney. I believe the answer is "yes". Some how this got turned in to an ethical issue. After reading the regulations on all of Taney, there seems to be no ethical issue at all. I do not see all the bait fishermen getting hammered on here for fishing with bait in lower Taney. Thats probably because it is perfectly legal. Now I dont bait fish just because I prefer not to. That is my right just as it is others right to fish with beads if they so choose. Absolutely nothing wrong with it. I guided up in Alaska all summer and used beads almost every day. Like stated before, as a guide it is my job to use the most productive methods possible. If the client is set on catching a fish on a sinking line stripping a 6" leach, well then it is my job to do my best to make that happen. If the fish are on nothing but eggs, all I can do is recommend what I know will catch fish, but ultimately it is my job to make the client happy and help achieve his/her goals for the trip. I have used beads on Taney and they have caught fish. I just prefer to strip mohair leaches, slump busters and soft hackles. I usually dont fish glow balls either, but if I was facing a skunk.........I would try a bead! I know others have opinions and that is great that they have the right to share them. You probably would not like to hear my opinion about other's opinions, so I will just keep those to myself A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. vanven Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 I was just trying to inject some humor. I am usually one of the first to bark about ethics and fishing. Not so much today. I dont care who you are, jokes in MSPaint are always funny. -Jerod

DD'sMC Posted December 19, 2008 Posted December 19, 2008 We make a living by what we get, but we make a life by what we give. The two best times to go fishing? When it is raining and when it is not.
