creek wader Posted March 2, 2009 Posted March 2, 2009 Does anyone know if they've stocked the Roubidoux, yet this year? wader
drew03cmc Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 There are holdover fish in the stream, along with smallies and rock bass! I say check it out and see what you can get. Andy

Are you are refering to trout as "holdover fish"? The longest holdover period for them is the ride in the hatchery truck. They announce the stocking days on the local radio station. Business's close, schools shut down, and people line the creek bank like a parade route. C&R is not allowed in Waynesville. But like you said, it is a great place to catch smallmouth and goggle eye this time of year.

But if that's the case I am suprised there are any smallies or rock bass left! cricket.c21.com

fishinwrench Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 It is a shame that Roubidoux spring isn't managed a little differently. I have fished it 7 times since 1998 and never seen, much less caught a trout in it. Obviously a result of bad timing. It does get a decent run of Smallies during winter high water events, but the fish don't seem to stay in it very long once the Gasconade clears back up. I've always expected questionable water quality, but I could be way off base (pun intended). The upper Roubidoux around hwy.17 looks worth exploring however. It supposably sinks somewhere between there and Waynesville. I never hear anyone talk about fishing it. Maybe a sleeper.

Some where between Plato and hwy 17 is all I can tell you, simply because I am not sure what the gravel road is called. The creek is pretty small up there, lots of small to 12 inch smallmouth. Lots of snakes, some I think might have been cottonmouths. Not sure on that.
ollie Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I don't know about the stocking, but I have always managed to catch both trout and smallies in that creek. My boy's uncle caught a nice 18" bow out of there a couple of summers ago right up past the bridge. I caught a smallie out of there around 18" as well, but that was about 5 years ago or so. Like others have said, you should be able to catch something out of there! "you can always beat the keeper, but you can never beat the post" There are only three things in life that are certain : death, taxes, and the wind blowing at Capps Creek!
Gavin Posted March 3, 2009 Posted March 3, 2009 I've fished the Roubi a few times on the way back from someplace else..It seems that I've always missed the stock truck when I've fished around the Spring..I've had decent success on the lower end down toward the G-Nade...Mostly smallmouth & rockbass with the occasional brown trout. Its kind of hard to wade in some spots. Havent fished the upper stretch south of 1-44 but I've heard that its a pretty float, but the fishing is poor. Cheers.

There are some holdover trout in the Ruby for sure. The White Ribbon Area won't have many, but the Red Ribbon Area should have plenty of trout in it right now, most of which will be brown trout, but some rainbows. It's a pretty stream, I'd give the Red Ribbon a try.
