I've been going to a chiropractor, Scott Gamm, for the last 5 years regularly. He has, in addition to adjustments, suggested exercises, stretches and given me tools to help with them. He also suggests other healthy ways to eat, suppling materials on nutrition and other things like cleanses (fun, fun).

What he and other chiropractors preach makes total sense. The adjustments seem like a racket to alot of people until their spinal cords start showing problems because of being out of whack for a long period of time.

I've had back trouble most of my adult life. Lower back with nerve problems. My spine curves which I'm sure doesn't help. Before I went to Scott, I'd have spells where I couldn't put on my socks or bend over at all, sometimes lasting 6 to 12 months. Most of it was nerve out of my lower back extending down my right leg. Since I've been going to Scott AND working out and stretching, I've had little problems. Am I pain free? No. I'm still stiff in the mornings but I can tie my shoes!! Seriously- find a GOOD chiro that doesn't just adjust and stay with it.

I do think (and I'm sure you agree) that too many people with back pain rush to the knife (surgery) when chiropractic/PT would give them a better long term result.

Greg

A quick story. My late father had slipped discs and pain for years. He finally went to an md and the md scheduled surgery the next day. My father was afraid of the knife and just didn't go for the surgery. He went to a chiro the same day, the chiro prescribed a series of simple exercises he did while laying on his back on the floor. In a short time he was pain free. Now with that being said I have never gone to a chiro despite having degenerative disc disease and osteoarthritis. I was having some upper back issues and the md sent me to PT. Didn't work.

I am considering a chiro when I have the next flair up.

Amen Greg! I wish they would all just get a long. Snagged in outlet 3, your missing the picture. Yes statin are for cholesterol. High Blood pressure and statin's go hand in hand. More than likely someone with high blood pressure is going to take a diuretic (make them lose water) and a statin. I know there are people out there but I havn't seen a pt yet that was only on statin drugs. Ususally they are pre-hypertensive if not hypertensive already. Look up the new research studies. Pubmed, ebsco, or just google. You will see what the research is saying. Next time you think I mispoke, it would be nicer to pm me rather than call me out.

I'm not trying to give anyone advice on the drugs you are taking. I was just trying to make a point. I was not trained for that and I do not have an expertise in that. That would be like you coming to me for pills and me going to the md for an adjustment. Neither would know what they were doing.

MD or Chiro? Definitely a debate for back pain........

Greg......I have heard the pros and cons to both medical sides and used both for different aches and pains in my life. There are needs for both professions but you have to sort it out. I could not criticize one or the other. My guess is that you are getting old like the rest of us and those long days bouncing about in a boat fishing all day has finally caught up with you. I would go with some Extra Strength Tylenol first, Chiro second, and MD last on this one.

I actually owe my life to a Chiro who found a cancerous lymph node in my neck in 1989 during a routine "spin-crack-adjust" visit. When my cancer treatments were finished and in full remission, I went back again to personally thank the man for extending my existence on this planet. That's been 20 years ago and I was very fortunate to beat the odds of the Big-C. I always referred to him as "the man with the golden hands".

Bredman - no offense but if you are meaning me and my back pain I don't think you read my posts very well. My pain is in the past. My MD referred me to a PT and my pain is mostly non-existent. As long as I do the excercises/stretching 5 or 6 times/week I'm pain free 99.9% of the time. At least in my case PT was the answer. If at some point that stops working then I would consider a chiropractor especially after reading doctaJ's and Phil Lilly's posts here.
