TroutRinger Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 What pound test and type of line do you guys use for smallie fishing in streams with really clear water? I've just been using 6# Trilene XL because it was either that or the 2# Maxima on my trout reels. I was going to buy some Tectan Premium Plus from Cabelas in a diameter similar to 6# Trilene, but they were sold out. I'm thinking about using some fluorocarbon line like Vanish in 6 or 8#'s, but I've never used fluoro before. "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." Geoff Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 i tell ya what man, at Denny Dennis i get this stuff from P-line, its flurocarbon coated. my 6 lb of this stuff is thinner diamemter then my regular 4lb line. and its the same price "When you do things right, people wont be sure you've done anything at all."
ozarkgunner Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 I use vanish #6 or my Table Rock rig which has #8 Vanish on it. It just depends on the size of the stream. On the James I like to use 8#. Angler At Law
KCRIVERRAT Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Berkley Vanish 6# test on the Jacks Fork works for me. That's one of the clearest streams, for it's size, in the state. HUMAN RELATIONS MANAGER @ OZARK FISHING EXPEDITIONS
Buzz Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Berkley..... Chief and I fished the clearest stream I've ever fished in this area Sunday, and I had just lined up with Berkley Trilene XL Smooth Casting clear blue 6 lb. test, and caught the heck out of the brownies. Berkley is my favorite brand of line. I cannot remember it ever failing me. I use Vanish and P-Line for trout. I should mention that this stream only gets a moderate to low amount of pressure. I would definately go with Vanish 4 or 6 lb., depending on what you are planning on throwing at them, on the more pressured streams. Buzz If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
Members JONBOY Posted June 16, 2009 Members Posted June 16, 2009 I have some true Fluoro P-Line 6#, not coated, and I had problems with it bird nesting on me on a spinning rod. My wife was mad at me b/c I gave that reel to her and it kept messing up on her. FYI.... other than that I don't really fish for smallies. Novice Fly fisher.
Flysmallie Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 A couple of years ago I started using Sufix Elite Lo-vis Green in 6 and 8 lb test. It's good line. I've also been using the same thing on my fly rod as a leader for smallmouth. Â Â
G-ROD Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 Iv'e been using Stren Magnathin in 6lb test for a while.. -------------------- Mo Smallmouth Hunter Gary
Gavin Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 On spin gear I use Hi-Vis Braided line with a 6'-7' Flourocarbon leader. For the business end fly or spin..., subsurface.... I use Seaguar or Berkeley Vanish flouro, in the 6-12lb range. On top, I use mono in the 6-12lb range. Cheers.
fishinwrench Posted June 16, 2009 Posted June 16, 2009 For spinning gear I've settled on P-Line Flouroclear in 6# for lightweight stuff, and P-Line CX Premium in 8# for medium sized baits and/or slightly bigger hooks.
