Not sure if this is the right place to post this, or if I should post anything at all. I've been giving this a bit of thought, and I think I'm going to stop posting on this forum for awhile. As of late, the forum has gotten really confrontational, to the point where I find myself in more personal arguments than constructive talk about fishing. It's as much my own fault as anyone's. I don't like the direction this site has been taking lately, and I don't want to be one to help bring it down. Again, nothing personal against anyone. If the forum kinda takes a different turn, and the arguments tend to get a bit less ugly, then I might come back in awhile. Until then...

C'mon man, that's not necessary. Some people just like to be oppositional. I would just avoid the more confrontational topics, and if one seems to start getting a little hairy, just stop posting on it. Things kind of fizzle out naturally if they're left alone, and most people really don't want to cause real trouble, they're just either stubborn, or bored and argumentative. Don't take your dolly and go home...stick around ;)

Ah... What I won't type at the end of a long day...... I keep telling myself to think before I type, but I don't listen to myself unfortunately.

I don't think I'll be leaving OAF.

I do feel like an idiot now.... Or wishing there was a button where you could delete this whole topic

Now about those spotted bass.......

I know what you mean. That trout thread you started got a little nasty, but it seems to me that was really just one person pushing back hard against a few people that simply didn't agree. Some people have trouble keeping things civil, and when I see that, I just back off and it goes away. I try not to talk about controversial stuff on forums like this, but sometimes people just WANT to argue. Geez, this forum is about fishing...if we can't get along here, we're in trouble on this planet. So about those spotted bass...

When you wear your heart on your sleeve, expect it to get trampled, especially in an anonymous setting. Remember, rehab is for quitters.

When things start getting personal, just back off. I will always speak up when I think I'm right about the facts of an ISSUE. But I try to keep in mind that you don't win arguments by attacking the "opponent" personally...that just makes them get their back up. I try to use facts and logic to make my points. The worst thing that happens to websites like this is when they become sniping galleries between personalities. Trust me, this site is FAR, FAR from being as bad as some I've seen. Go to the "bicker and banter" section of Paddling.net. Some really substantive issues are discussed there, but all to often the discussions quickly deteriorate into nasty, pointless attacks on each other by about a dozen or so of the same posters.

Just stop and think before you post...are you making a point about the issue, or talking about the person?

FWIW, I'd have to say that this site is about as plain vanilla as they come. Some minor disagreements, and a bit of arguing but it stays cival for the most part.

Not every confrontation requires a response. Honestly, the most powerful response you can make sometimes it to simply skip it.

Kinda like others have said -- argue your issue civilly, stick to facts and build your position. If your opponent makes it personal, nit-picks your spelling, or otherwise doesn't refute your position, then you've won. Take satisfaction in knowing that, and don't expect or need someone to declare you the winner. Move on.

Lotsa gentlemen on here, and a few that aren't. Just like real life.

I've gotta say I'm glad you are not leaving OAF. I really enjoy your posts. You are obviously very knowledgeable. And I could say the same thing about the other OAF member that you have been having a few issues with recently (Chief). I don't know why but it seems like on internet forums things are very easily misconstrued and blown out of proportion. Not really anyone's fault usually. This forum is actually pretty tame and civil compared to a few others I've been on.
