ozark trout fisher Posted October 26, 2009 Author Posted October 26, 2009 Dunno who your poacher was, but there were alot of folks on that creek, including me on Saturday...fished the same stretch you did as well.. Stayed at Onandaga CG with the family Friday-Sunday...was hoping to float the Meramec, but it was up so I high that I was leary of pulling in to the state park CG on Friday afternoon...Apparently they closed the CG road due to high water for a couple hours on Friday night. Fished Blue Spring on Saturday AM. The lower creek had a car at every turnoff when I got there at 8:30 am...so parked at the top of the CA, hiked down to N and started fishing up....I drew a blank at the first good looking spot. Then my heart sank as another angler approached heading downstream...Some young oriental dude with a fly rod and indi setup and a bright orange fly line..Said he caught five. Didnt see any fish on him... r Took three fly changes to figure em out...after that it was eggcellent.... Upstream cast,no indicator, yarn egg 18" behind one or two AA shot. Not sure how many..probably 20-25 before I had to head back to Onandaga at 11am. Pretty 8-12" fish for the most part. Cheers. That's odd. When I fished there on Sunday there wasn't anyone else fishing. I guess it might have had something to do with the rain
flyfishmaster Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 OTF & Gavin, It is great to hear the both of you did well on this little stream. So was the water clear or a bit off color? OTF, You said you used a 6wt rod, what was the length of the rod. Just curious since the canapy is a bit low around the upper part of the stream. Later, FFM Woo Hoo Fish On!!
Gavin Posted October 26, 2009 Posted October 26, 2009 Water was up and a bit milky looking, couldnt see bottom in spots over 2' deep and thats were the fish were...canopy was tight, but my 7'9" bamboo 5wt was perfect for tossing an egg and either one or two AA' shot upstream 30-40'..Trick was to get em down quick, and strip in line to maintain contact with the flies.... Felt most of the strikes...fish feel different than shot ticking bottom..Guess some might call it Chezch nymphing but its just old school upstream nymph fishing/pocket picking. Cheers.

I was certainly fighting the brush all day. 6 weight isn't the right rod for the creek, but it's the only one I have. I'm looking at nice little 4 wt to use specifically for these little creeks.
joeD Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 I may have to rethink my position on Blue Spring Creek. I always pass it on the way in and out of the Campbell Bridge to BSC smallmouth excursion. But it is always v.low and clear. Does the higher water help? I've never heard anyone really fish it "seriously." By the way Gavin, it is "Asian" dude, not "oriental" dude. Just to be PC. Just sayin'. Sorry.

It makes the trout a little less shy.
Gavin Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 Joe its worth a stop for an hour or two on the way to or from someplace else, or a high water spot...but I wouldnt call it a serious destination...The fish are small for one thing..a 12" fish is a really good one for that creek. Frankly, I'd rather float Cambell to BSC, better fishing and better scenery. Cheers.

There small, but I get more thrill catching them than about anything else.
ColdWaterFshr Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 I'd agree its not really a destination type of place. Perfect for a couple hour fishin-fix, but its like miniature fishing. I think a 3 weight or smaller, and a 7'6 length, no more than 8' is the perfect set-up. Any more people than yourself there and its crowded. Be sure and wear orange. Couple bow-hunters there on Friday which had me looking over my shoulder. When rifle season opens, I wouldn't go in there at all.
joeD Posted October 27, 2009 Posted October 27, 2009 I guess little nymphs would be the general choice. Would EHC be asking too much? Just curious. Thanks for the replies.
