I wasn't sure where to post this... conservation issues is as good as any I guess.

Let me say this could be easily seen as political, another reason I hesitated to post it but I thought it would be good conversation on these cold days.

I've watched the shows. They are extreme. They are showman. I cant' put a finger on how I would describe exactly how I feel about what they are doing. I know what they are trying to do... call attention to Japanese whale fishing, illegal or legal, I don't know enough about it to comment.

To me, it would be kin to walking out to Taney and if smoeone is fishing illegally.....walking up and punching them in the face, or if they were in the boat, attempting to sink it. I draw the line at forcefully imposing my will upon someone.

This guy has a long history with Greenpeace....but they disowned him because he was far to radical. There was a very good article in the NY Times about him and his actions.

I find killing whales for food, killing sharks for their fins and bears for their gall bladder pretty offensive. The fact it was all started when they were ignorant of the consequences is no reason to continue now that they know the harm and immorality of it.

let them harass them, and hold the whaling captains accountable for excess,

Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.

Killing whales for food? If the fishery is managed, and that's a big if considering enforcement, something we've hashed around here alot, whales, again IF there are enough to harvest, should be. They've been doing it for hundreds of years.

I posted it because of the outlandish statements of the captain... "They ran into us. We weren't even moving. We were trying to get out of their way." Again, they're video shows them pulling right in the way, being careful just to put their pointy part of the boat to be hit.

I think the whole chase-boat thing is a bit ridiculous. If you ask me, what the GreenPeace and PETA folks need to do is start chaining themselves to the whales, like they do the sequoias and redwoods :D

I know nothing about the market for whale products; I've never really had a desire to eat whale, and from what I've heard it tastes awful. But I do have a soft spot for those kitschy scrimshaw whalebone carvings you see sometimes.

Anyway, harvesting whales makes me nervous- most populations haven't bounced back from where they were pre-harvest, several populations are extinct, and several more have been depleted from hundreds or tens of thousands of individuals to thousands or hundreds of individuals. Fishing technology has only improved since commercial whaling was banned, and it wouldn't take much pressure to push some of those populations back over the edge. Frankly, I don't need whale meet or scrimshawed carvings so bad as to risk the extinction of populations or species.

As for GreenPeace and the Japanese/Nordic nations which are still harvesting whales- what GreenPeace does seems to me akin to the guy who dumps a water bottle on a burning building. It's a sideshow. It makes for great TV, for a great soundbite on the evening news, and it's a hell of a lot sexier than sitting down with scientists and international agencies and policy wonks and hashing out what to do to actually prevent whaling. But I'm not sure how much of an effect it has on reducing the market for whale meat, or actually preventing that many whales from being killed.

I don't believe any are allowed to be killed for anything but research. Most are threatened and I believe a few are endangered. The Japanese are notorious for killing more than most feel is necessary for research. A few are killed by natives, but its severely limited.

I be pretty satisfied with a complete and total ban on whale hunting. The only research being done is developing new tasty recipes for whale blubber. Japanes commerical fishing doesn't have the reputation of being compliant with the letter or intent of conservation laws.

If I had to choose between the two, I'd like more whales and less people.

The only thing he is ever trying to draw attention to is himself. Like when the Whalers supposedly shot him. He's an idiot.

Crew of the Sea Shepard is doing what could be called an Act of Piracy

Piracy

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Jump to: navigation, search

This article is about maritime piracy. For the term referring to copyright infringement or other uses of "piracy" or "pirate", see Pirate (disambiguation).

Piracy is a war-like act committed by private parties (not affiliated with any government) that engaged in acts of robbery and/or criminal violence at sea. The term can include acts committed in other major bodies of water or on a shore. It does not normally include crimes committed against persons traveling on the same vessel as the actor (e.g. one passenger stealing from others on the same vessel). The term has been used to refer to raids across land borders by non-state actors.
