fozzype Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 The link to the video below should be watched by anyone who runs a rig. We all think we know the limits of our boats, but accidents do happen. Seeing things like this really made me think. Go to the 1 minute mark to see what happens. Be careful out there. Brett B. Foz
redbud Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 What a knucklehead. Good thing he was alone. He crashed on a wake made by the boat that was filming him.Was this his first time out in his new boat?Amen to the vest and kill switch, use it every time.
eric1978 Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Yeah, it doesn't help he was driving like a complete lunatic. He got what he was asking for.
Members tunchi Posted May 14, 2010 Members Posted May 14, 2010 Glad his injuries weren't life threatening and he will be OK. I am sure he is a veteran boater. One error almost cost him dearly. Makes you think. We all have those moments-- boating , on the road or what ever. Thank God for life vests and kill switches! Becky B
Sam Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 As my grandpa would have said, "There ain't no use in that!". I'm glad the guy's OK, but he was driving like a nut. The guy in the video wasn't doing this, but I've noticed some of the worst boat-driving comes from guys who tear down the lake with their motor trim adjusted to throw about a 20-foot roostertail in the air. I saw one of those pass the other day, and that wastes a lot of power. I always wonder if they just don't know better or if they do it on purpose to show off. Either way, when I see that it often seems to go along with reckless behavior and I give 'em a wide berth. My partner and I want to fish Tablerock today, but we woke up to a line of thunderstorms that stretches clear down into Texas. Now we're on temporary hold, waiting to see if it'll pass so we can go later this morning. Fishing and dodging thunderboomers - it must be springtime!
Flysmallie Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 but I've noticed some of the worst boat-driving comes from guys who tear down the lake with their motor trim adjusted to throw about a 20-foot roostertail in the air. That used to be the big thing.....how big a rooster tail your boat would throw. It's not as bad as what it used to be but you still see a few out there. This guys biggest problem was that he didn't know when to let off of the throttle. Either that or he was using a hot foot and couldn't get his foot out of it. One thing about boats running those speeds if you get out of it they slow down in a hurry. It's guys like this that give the other guys that do enjoy a fast boat a bad name. You CAN do it safely. Â Â
fishinwrench Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Been there/Done that. If you are one of those types that has to keep pushing and pushing, always looking for just a little more speed....it's only a matter of time. It just takes a few close calls and one good loss of control episode (like the one in that video) to calm your butt down. If you live through it you learn something, if you don't, Nobody does. I have alot of customers that are constantly asking about performance upgrades and my standard statement to them is: Do you want to race...or fish ? If racing is what you are interested in, then you should sell your bassboat and buy (or build) a center console, closed bow boat designed for racing.
dtrs5kprs Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 Saw a couple of guys running a Stroker (?) back and forth in Aunts Cr last week back by the second ramp. Would have been last Fri or Sat eve about 7pm. Had a big Yamaha with a funny cowling on it & I walked down to check out what the motor was, didn't think of it but may have been the Dyna Prop guys. They were running for speed, boat, motor, gas, batteries, TM, and said something like 100# to simulate tackle. Could tell boat was quick from the parking lot, but it GPS'd 90MPH on their best run . Know my Ranger is a barge, but there is no way I would ever get in anything like that. Boat was barely in the water, could see the wind catching it and moving it around. Not familiar with the brand, but reminded me of some Bullets / Blazers I have seen...long, pointy, and abut as heavy as a sugar wafer. Not for me, thank you. I want about 20' of Champ, Ranger, or similar under me.
Ranger Z22 Posted May 14, 2010 Posted May 14, 2010 We also saw those guys. They were running the new Yamaha SHO 4 stroke, couldn't tell make of boat, probally ripped the letters off the side running up and down the lake. You are right, they were flying. My Ranger is slow, but thats ok, don't want a face lift, or my collar beating me to death. z22

I'd rather be able to run wakes and waves at 50-60mph and not feel like the boat is coming apart under me. That's why I bought it. Think the brown fish like that I go slow, makes me look less serious, less threatening. Had it 5 years and only turned hour 76 last week. I left when they started unbolting the TM to try and get a few more mph. Impressive show, thought maybe the wind would flip it on over a time or two. It had that crazy fast hull sound to it.
