eric1978 Posted June 16, 2010 Posted June 16, 2010 This is exactly what I don't get. Obama is a lawyer, not an offshore oil drilling expert. What exactly do you expect him to do? Should he himself be personally responsible for the solution to stopping this spill? If the oil experts can't come up with something, how do you expect a lawyer to? Sorry, but he's no longer a lawyer. He's the President. And the buck stops with him, as they say. BP is responsible for the leak and responsible for the cleanup. But I would have preferred to see Obama get on this thing the day it happened, order every resource available to dispatch to the gulf, gather all the best minds in the oil industry, the Corps of Engineers and MIT, and set up camp down there until this thing was stopped and under control, then send BP the bill. But instead he decided to play politics with it, and tried to keep his distance and allow BP to clean up their own mess. Big surprise that they haven't. I do have to say though, that if Obama had jumped in with both feet right away and grabbed the bull by the horns, conservatives would be up in arms about how he's interfering with the private sector, and bailing out another corporation and how only a socialist communist Nazi Marxist would do that plus he wants to kill your grandma and blah blah blah the usual Republican talking points. He's really in a no-win situation, but I wish he would have erred on the side of the environment. He definitely blew it. At least he got a 20 billion dollar slush fund from BP today for the folks down there who are hurting. It won't be enough in the long run, but it's something.

I'll give you a little room on his dragging his feet on this. But the POTUS does have many other issues to contend with than this oil spill. Plus, we don't know how well informed he was kept about the severity of the spill since BP was lying about the amount being spilled every day. At first they made it out to be only a few thousand gallons a day. Now we are being told it's 2.5 million. As for gathering all the best resources available to fix this, didn't BP do that? Were they not supposed to have a contingency plan? Why did BP drag their feet? Obama sent the Coast Guard and Navy to try to help when it was made clear that this was a MAJOR problem. What other resources does the federal government have to fix this? They aren't in the oil buisness. As for BP actually paying out that $20 Billion, I'll believe that when I hear about people getting their checks. Tonights news had a report of them not getting a single penny of promised money yet and that was promised weeks ago. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
jdmidwest Posted June 17, 2010 Author Posted June 17, 2010 OOHWEE, its getting deep on this one. We all know it was Busch and Cheney's fault. The speech last night was nothing new, no solutions. Just a stump campaign to free ourselves from foreign oil dependency. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
eric1978 Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 We all know it was Busch and Cheney's fault. Well, not the slow response to fix this thing, we can't blame that on them. But they are certainly at least partially responsible for the spill, because of the backroom deregulation and the Cheney cronyism at the MMS...like it or not, it's fact.
Smalliebigs Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 JD, don't you know everything is going to be Bush and Cheney's fault for pretty much the rest of time here.Actually after the Valdez went down off of coast Alaska, it was a republican majoirty congress and old slick boy Bill Clinton who allowed the oil companies to run things a muck. They allowed oil companies to put a cap on the amount they could be responsible for in clean ups and they also allowed the oil companies to map where they were allowed to drill and what restrictions they would be held to in the future.People need to quit blaming Dick Cheney or Bush it really makes you sound weak, kind of like you listen to the left wing talking points. I know 1989 was a long time ago for some of the youngsters on here, there were things that actually happened before Obama not just Bush & Cheney. On that note I am going to get my new boat this weekend with my dad and burn some gas, I am going to hammer it from Big Cedar to the James arm.Obama's speech in the oval office was a joke and will have no effect on my Fathers day weekend.Have fun on your computers I am getting in my truck and driving to the Rock and burning some gas with my brand new Yamaha 200 4 stroke.
Don Allenbaugh Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 And today we have Congressman Barton from Texas who apologized to BPs Hayward for the government making them put $20 Billion into a fund for cleanup and payment. This guy needs to be put out to pasture. Don A

Why are you blaming Clinton for the Exxon Valdez spill? That happened in 1989 when George Bush was president. Clinton wasn't elected until 1990 and didn't take office until 1991. I guess it was a long time ago and you don't remember what happened either. There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.

There's a fine line between fishing and sitting there looking stupid.
Chief Grey Bear Posted June 17, 2010 Posted June 17, 2010 ...like it or not, it's fact. If there is anything the right hates....it's fact. If there is anything the right likes to distort...it's fact. They're painting BP as the victim and the US as the villian. Got to just love ol Rush, Sean and the team. Why are you blaming Clinton for the Exxon Valdez spill?
