tjulianc Posted September 8, 2010 Author Posted September 8, 2010 There is another canoe that I was wondering if anyone has ever paddled and that is a Bell. I've found a used Bell Wildfire royalex, which I think became the Yellowstone solo, for sale. Bell is a pricey canoe, and I was wondering if anyone has any personal experience with one. Also, does anyone know when Old Town changed the model from the Discovery 164 to the 169? Thanks.
Wayne SW/MO Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 "Also, does anyone know when Old Town changed the model from the Discovery 164 to the 169? " I don't but it must have been awhile, I've never heard of one. They made a 158, don't know if they still do? I've owned a 169, they will carry a huge load, but the maneuverability isn't all that great. In this area where overnighters are the norm, narrower and lighter canoes are probably better. Something like the Penobscot for instance. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Gavin Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 I have allot of friends who paddle Disco 169's...they dont turn as well as my 17" Wenonah Spirit II. But they turn well enough.Better than a POS Coleman, Pelican or the like.... They are also very durable..I dont recall the Disco 164, but a friend has had a Disco 158 forever...good boat too.... The Bell Yellowstone Solo looks like it would make a competant solo fishing canoe. It probably wont track as well as a Vagabond, shorter, more rocker......but it looks allot better than an OT Pack......I'd grab it if the price was right. Paddle it a couple times, and if you dont like it, sell it for what you have in it....Cheers.
superfly Posted September 8, 2010 Posted September 8, 2010 Go checked out a Nucanoe at Marine Repair Center in Springfield. Asked for Brad. I bet he will let you demo one. They are a lot of fun to fish out of. Tell him Superfly sent you from Ozarkanglers.
tjulianc Posted September 9, 2010 Author Posted September 9, 2010 After doing a little research, it looks like the Disco 164 is now the Penobscot 164. I found one for sale, good price and and condition. I am now thinking about getting two canoes. A solo and a tandem. Any thoughts on the Penobscot 164?
Gavin Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 The Penobscot 164 is a pretty good boat......Its kinda wide, and a bit heavy, but it should be good boat for fishing & extended trips in this part of the world. Cheers.
Wayne SW/MO Posted September 9, 2010 Posted September 9, 2010 I have no idea why OT introduced the Penobscot 164 etc. using the name of a canoe that has been very successful for them for decades. There dosen't seem to be ll that much resemblance. The Penobscot 164 doesn't have a whole lot on the Disco 169. It narrower at the waterline which will make it a little faster, but the beam will make it suffer the same problems the Disco has, without the benefit of its capacity. I would look for an RX, or the older Royalex Penobscot. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
RSBreth Posted September 10, 2010 Posted September 10, 2010 If you could paddle whatever model you're looking at before you buy it would be easier making a decision, but I realize that probably isn't possible. I still love my Pack, but I portage a lot, and most folks would probably be happier with the 119 Guide, as it's tougher and will take more abuse. I need to put skid plate on my Pack right now, but haven't had time nor money to do so.
grizwilson Posted September 18, 2010 Posted September 18, 2010 We have a disco 158, 169 and a pack. The 169 is the best tandem boat, the 158 does a great job solo when hauling a camp (I take too much crap, but comfortable)The pack is great for fishing and day trips, but with less than 200 miles under it, it looks more abused than either of the old discos that are 10-15 years old and have logged over 1000 miles each. If had to own only one, 158 wins. “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
