denjac Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 This didnt happen here. Dont know all the details yet. I took this off a facebook friends page. There was a death involved. Just a reminder for all of us to be careful out there. Sad. Heres the details. It was a BFL tournament. One Dead in Boating Accident on Lake Barkley By Barry Wright EDDYVILLE, KY - One man has died as a result of a boating accident on Lake Barkley Friday morning. Lyon County Coroner Ronnie Patton told the Paducah Sun that the man has been identified as 41-year old Freddie McCrory of Europa, Mississippi. Sgt. Garry Clark with Kentucky Fish and Wildlife says two bass boats in two different tournaments collided on the lake near Kuttawa at approximately 7:15 am Friday. One boat, with two people aboard, was fishing the Renegade Bass Classic, while the other boat, also with two people aboard, was fishing in the BFL Regional bass tournament. Both boats were in the main channel, one going east while the other was going west when the collision happened. Both boaters tried to make amends, but still collided. The driver of the Renegade boat was ejected. He had his life jacket and kill switch on, so it didn't hurt him. His passenger was not hurt. In the other boat, the passenger did have the boat hit him and he died on the scene. The driver was okay because he had his lifejacket on and kill switch hooked up while moving. Man, that is horrible I have good friends who have slips and houses in Eddyville Creek on Barkley, they used to be @ Kuttawa in a place called Buzzard Rock and all kinds of bad things have happened over there. When I fished tournaments guys would consistantly push the envelope with the performances of some of their rigs. It's scary sometimes, the channel is deep there but outside the channel and it very shallow espicially when they draw down the lake a little bit.People need to back off a little and slow down a bit, I never throttle my boat all the way up.I really do feel sorry for that guy and his family it's a shame.
Flysmallie Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I agree it's a horrible accident. But it's not about speed. It's about not paying attention. Â Â
Larry Eby Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I agree it's a horrible accident. But it's not about speed. It's about not paying attention. They were both paying attention. The issue from what I've gleaned off the net is that both corrected in the same path twice until it was too late. I've known from long ago which boat has the right of way and which way to turn in the event of two boats approaching each other head-on. But, not everyone may know the proper navigational rules of conduct. What I've learned from this incident is to give way or move to a different angle sooner. Two boats approaching each other at around 70 gps doesn't leave much time to double correct. I'm not dogging a fast boat, mine runs with the bigger dogs, just changing the way I approach another head-on boater. It may take a few seconds off my take-off run, but I'll arrive there.
Members JimmyBaja Posted October 13, 2010 Members Posted October 13, 2010 That is so tragic. My prayers are with the families involved. Hope the P.A.A. tournament this week on the lake is safe and everyone gets to enjoy the beauty of Table Rock's fall seasonal change.

I think I read that one of the drivers has been previously in another collision during a tournament.

steveearle Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I was down there last week (and on the day it happened). It was a fog issue. There was very little of it on Friday but there were isolated patches around the lake--it was actually worse on Saturday...The eerie thing is that I actually met and talked to David Young at the KenLake ramp during practice (looking for any pointers). Gave me weird chills when I found out he was the boater....The accident rumors were floating around our weigh-in before we had the details. He is the person who got second in the FLW lasy year losing to Keith Williams when William caught a 9-1 on day 4 and Young jumped off a bunch of big ones.... KY is a dangerous lake for several reasons.....
Stump bumper Posted October 13, 2010 Posted October 13, 2010 I have had a heated arguement on another board that slowing down when approaching another boat head on is always the best move since it gives both boats more tine to react. I can't believe that there are so many people that will argue that is it is dangerous to run anything but WOT during the first hour of a tournament. That is why I can't enter a draw tournament as a non boater, I would love to fish with different people but I just can't put my life in the hands of someone who might have those feelings. I just feel so bad for that poor man who just happened to draw that boat on that day, I can't help to think if I was entering as a boater and my wife as a non boater how I would feel if that was my wife. I would place blame on both the boaters, how could a person not. To slow down to the point of coming off plane until the danger clears should not be a sin, I have done it for wake boats, striper guides even canoes during tournament take offs just because I couldn't be sure what they would do.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted October 14, 2010 Root Admin Posted October 14, 2010 May be they should make all drivers take a OUPV Captain's test before driving. They cover these issues specifically in their manuals. That way everyone plays, or boats, by the same rules. I know... more gov't/regulations are bad, but . . .
