FishinCricket Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 The light never shined on it, just in it's direction. I didn't get a chance to see exactly what it was. Well I'm not one to doubt a story one way or the other (I personally hope it was a Sasquatch who had smelled you and was coming close for a better sniff, maybe a lick or two), I just know that: Light plays funny tricks with shadows at night, especially when a light doesn't hit something directly.. Water reflects and refracts light which means everything in this situation. A beaver whacking the surface sounds like a 12 gauge going off. If you've never heard it in person you WILL underestimate it. (I'm guilty of that, And I'll admit I did have to change my shorts after) Beavers CAN get darn big anyway. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Beaver As I said, I'd prefer to think it was a Sasquatch or something, but beaver is more likely than bear.. (can't for the life of me think of what a bear would be doing in that situation.. lol) cricket.c21.com
Al Agnew Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 I've had a few spooky bear encounters as well. I was fishing on the Boulder River in Montana, wading up the river (it's about the size of upper Current River but wider and more open) when I heard a tremendous crashing in the brush on the bank to the right, and then this humongous brown phase black bear comes flying out of the brush, splashes into the river about 20 or 30 yards upstream from me, and goes bulldozing its way straight across the river throwing spray high in the air. Up the other side, disappeared into the brush. Took about three seconds, and really raised the hair on my head!
KATroutman13 Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 Not sure if it is "creepy," but certainly scary. It was over either Labor Day or Memorial weekend, I was fishing on the Norfork tailwater in the trophy section at night. I waded up the river and fished. I twas really foggy and eerie and the fish weren't biting. I began to walk back down stream to the handicap access along the bank. When about 15 feet in front of me, several deer burst out of the water and up the bank. I nearly crapped my pants that night.
Bill B. Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 H*ll, I get startled when herons fly out of the trees overhead at night below the hatchery at Taneycomo. Rawwwk! A beaver can really wake you up when it bumps into your legs while you are belly-boating in a strip pit at night. Or when a big ol' water snake wriggles through your legs while you are in a belly boat.
Trevor K Posted October 20, 2010 Posted October 20, 2010 I was in a personal pontoon last summer fishing a really clear pond and had several crappie and bluegill on a stringer to take home and fry later. Well, I was sitting there with my feet in the water. Next thing I know I look down and there is a huge snapping turtle coming up from the bottom right at me. I learned right then just how fast I could paddle away from an area. That was definately not what I wanted to see right below me.
vanven Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 Night fishing at Taney one night I felt a tug on my waders. I ignored it the first time. After a second tug I clicked on my head lamp and there was a small muskrat or beaver hanging on my leg at about knee height. I squealed and launched it about 50 feet across the water. I know it was harmless but it really scared me. I didnt expect to look down and have something staring up at me. -Jerod
eric1978 Posted October 21, 2010 Posted October 21, 2010 I squealed and launched it about 50 feet across the water. I love it when guys are big enough to admit they screamed like a little girl. A little truth in a story goes a long way.

Buzz Posted October 22, 2010 Posted October 22, 2010 This whole thread brings to mind the classic Jeff Foxworthy Line: You might be a redneck if.....You've ever had your nipple bitten off by a beaver. If fishing was easy it would be called catching.
