KCRIVERRAT Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 I think a couple years ago they found a dead one that was hit by a car in the KC metro area. You could Google it up pretty quick though. SIO3 Some gal was driving up here north of the river and clobbered one at the I-29/I35 split. MDC said it was a wild mountain lion. There's lots of deer and turkey in that area, as well as little kids playing in the backyards of apartment complexes. Didn't hear about the Raytown cat though. Most times they've claimed ( the MDC ) that the cats have followed the Missouri River from the northwest. HUMAN RELATIONS MANAGER @ OZARK FISHING EXPEDITIONS
fishinwrench Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 Most times they've claimed ( the MDC ) that the cats have followed the Missouri River from the northwest. So what TF's brother DIDN'T see was the massive herd of elk that crossed the road right before the cat did ? Ok, now THAT'S worth calling MDC about
troutfiend1985 Posted November 8, 2010 Author Posted November 8, 2010 I'm pretty sure that my brother will just hang up if it takes too long. I was just going off of the idea that in Yellowstone they want you to report grizzlies. Given the location, and that an elementary school is roughly 4 blocks away, if that, I figured it would be the right thing to do. Now, what the MDC does with the information is the MDC's business. But at least I, along with my brother, could wipe my hands clean of the situation. Yeah, self serving at its finest. But I know that I couldn't live if a mountain lion attacked a 5 or 6 year old kid and I didn't bug my brother to at least call the MDC about the situation. eric1978 Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 If it's gonna help you sleep at night, go for it. I just think MDC probably gets crazy calls all the time about wildlife sightings that are nonsense (not saying yours is), and they probably take most of those calls with a grain of salt unless it's verifiable somehow. Y'naw da mean? You don't bug me, by the way. You're not in the same galaxy of annoying as...well, you know who you are.
Wheatenheimer Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 When I was in high school ('87 or '88 I suppose) a buddy of mine and myself were fishing on the Little Sac north of Springfield. We came across two dead critters that were dumped. One was an adult Coonhound. The other was a Black Bear cub. Both shot in the head. I went home and told my Dad, we drove out and he confirmed that I was correct on the ID's. My buddy went home and told his Stepdad, who also visualy confirmed that we were not full of crap. I called the MDC. They sent out an agent. The next day agent Smith called me and said that he found a dead Coonhound and a dead Chow Chow at the sight that I described. Now day's Bear sightings are not that uncommon in the Ozarks. Mountain Lions are uncommon, just like Bears were in the late '80's. The MDC does not want the liability of reporting a "Predator" animal in an urban area that would cause a social panic attack. With that being said, if KC Bro reported his sighting, the MDC may or may not do anything about it and they may try to convince your Brother that he witnessed a Greyhound chasing a Rabbit. My 2 cents.
Outside Bend Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 It doesn't affect anyone aside from you and your brother. Do whatever you need to. <{{{><
ColdWaterFshr Posted November 8, 2010 Posted November 8, 2010 Got into a serious debate about this very thing with a co-worker who lives in KC. She's an outdoorsy chick. Seems bona fide about most her stuff. Until one day, we were talking about biking and she said she goes mtn biking all the time as some big park on the outskirts of KC. She said she has had several "encounters" with mountain lions that are known to be quite common in this park, several close-up and eyewitness accounts --this according to her and her husbands friends who bike it all the time. I'm thinking they must have some good blotter acid or gonja. Well, me being me, I threw out my BS flag onto the field and asked for a review of the play. It took several calls but for "proof" from an unbiased source on the matter and we finally got to a department deep within the bowels of MDC and also Kansas Conservation Dept, whoever they are, I forget. Long story short --- they get a LOT of this, and in almost all cases, guess what it turns out to be? a yellow lab. and in rare instances, a bobcat.

There was a report up by Moberly that a lion had been hit by a car. Turned out to be a golden retriever. It happens. If you were on foot or bike and saw a mountain lion, it probably wasn't a mountain lion. <{{{><
troutfiend1985 Posted November 8, 2010 Author Posted November 8, 2010 You don't bug me, by the way. You're not in the same galaxy of annoying as...well, you know who you are. No I know, it was my feeble attempt at poking you three, hoping I could be funny, I need to work on that Anyways, if the MDC would dismiss this as b.s. then no skin off my nose. The MDC can do what it wants, but if it tells my brother that it was a yellow lab, then I would just have to shake my head while muttering under my breath. It's not like either my brother or I have a vested interest, as in that we'll be heartbroken if it turns out to be the proverbial "yellow lab." I would feel better if I thought there wasn't a mountain lion from the aspect of safety, but then again it would be neat to think that there are unknowns out there. I guess what I am trying to say is that I don't have a dog in the fight, could care less either way, but I want to do the right thing and let them know that this is a possibility. What the government does from there is not my business, and if they want to act in a less than appropriate manner then I would only be embarrassed in that they represent me. “The greatest menace to freedom is an inert people” J.
