All of what you say is varied. I still can cast a 1/32 jig further than most and that is on a 5' Falcon UL. Difference is I have a spinning reel with an extra wide bail. The line just flies off it when I cast. For the streams I fish around here you need something a little shorter to get around all the overhanging trees. Plus the fact I rarely am casting further than 20 feet out. I guess what I am saying is that it isn't always true that you need a longer rod to get distance. There are other factors that can play a part.

Fair enough Ollie.

I primarily fish the White River for trout. It is a little bigger water with the shot at a giant fish. FWIW, I fish 6 lb P-Line CX Premium. 4 lb diamter in a 6 lb line. Very supple.

I am the same. White/norfork rivers. 6lb test p-line. 6.5' ultra lite rod for jigs and very small jerkbaits and a 7' medium action for bigger jerkbaits.

everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

I'm looking into buying an ultralight rod for trout fishing (I'd use it for other species as well). What is your preference? A long rod with a very sensitive tip, or a short (between 4'6" and 5'6") rod?

Thanks in advance for the feedback.

My preference is 6' to 6'6" ultra and light action rods. 6'6" is what I use the most. Great for tossing light jigs and the length isn't a problem as you might think. I have no desire to use my 4' and 5' rods anymore. Phil Lilley sells a pretty nice and inexpensive 6'6" trout rod at his tackle shop labeled with his name. I picked one up last year and really like it. I think he told me Falcon made them. I have always used one piece rods too but I recently bought a two piece rod that I really like as well.

Thanks to everyone for the quick replies. All good information, for sure. Looks like I'll be leaning toward the longer rod. I don't get out in a boat much.

Best wishes to all.

Medium/Light action Berkely lightning rod or cherry rod for me.

Yep, I've got the 5 foot two piece Berkely Lightning UL rod and it has been one of the best rods to date. Attached to it is a Daiawa 1505T Jupiter-x Spinning reel. Also have a 5-foot Eagle Claw yellow fiberglass attached to a tiny Shimano(can't remember the model) spinning reel that hasn't been too bad.

i've went to fly rods now,but the longer the better to lift up as much line as poosible out of the water when setting the hook. we use strike indicators over a jig mostly. maybe have a shorty set up for something and a long one set up another. long loomis or white river lites.

personally not a fan of UL actions, the typically have too little backbone to toss a lure properly. I prefer a light or medium light action with a softer tip. the ugly sticks are great for that, I like the 'lite' series that ugly stick makes. they have a 5'6" light action 2pc that is nice, if you want something a bit longer or in UL action they have a 7foot UL that might be tempting.
