Looking To Catch Some Sauger

I'd like to catch a Sauger this year. I've never caught one. I've been in the boat with someone that caught one, but I have not.

Any ideas where a decent place to try a get that done?

Nothings close to Mtn Home, but a shorter drive would be a plus.

It's not a short drive for you, but I've caught several this time of year below Alton Lock and Dam just north of St. Louis on the Mississippi river.

What do you consider a "shorter drive" to be? Is 13 hours too long? I could turn you on to some sauger fishing back in WI. Not sure about where to in AR or MO. My best guess would be anywhere they have been stocked or where there are natural populations of walleye.

Honestly don't know why anyone would even target them other than to say they've caught one.

Then you would also have to target the saugeye. Walleye/sauger mix.

If not the Miss River, Kentucky lake is full of them...Caught them on a shakey head in June on accident...

I always Sauger fished in Pickwick Lake, part of the Tennessee River System in TN. May be too far to drive. Walleye, the sauger's larger kin should be found near Mtn. Home.

Yeah, I don't know of anywhere in the Ozarks where I could go and actually EXPECT to catch a sauger. I've caught them on lower Black River and in the Diversion Channel. Probably the closest decent possibility to you, Ham, would be lower Spring River. They are cool looking fish, though.

I one Sauger that I have seen caught was on the Spring River below Imboden.

I just love to catch all kinds of different fish and it would be fun to me to go catch a few. I'm NOT expecting it to replace smallmouth bass as my favorite fish or anything.

The Lake Norwood or Arkansas River at LR both seem like viable options.
