Champ188 Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 I can report that rumors of a Spook/Red Fin bite in the Eagle Rock area are greatly exaggerated. Seriously, I fished that area Wednesday and found it severely tough. Caught one short LM and and a surprise rainbow, both on a McStick jerk bait. Water temp was around 42. It was good to get out.
gitnby Posted January 27, 2011 Author Posted January 27, 2011 Well guys I can tell ya that the jerkbait bite was not hard core today. I had the pleasure to fish with (denjac), another O.A.F. member on here. We fished the dam area and had two fish today, one each on a jerkbait. One just shy keeper Kentucky on a Megabass(denjac) and a keeper largemouth on a custom Pointer (me). We each had a couple other "swipes" with no hook ups. Tried to spoon up a few with no takers. BTW........Wow, is the lake low! Champ, how long were you pausing the bait? I fished KC area bit yesterday afternoon and varied the pause from 5-30 seconds+. Couldn't stir up anything with the X-Rap, so I tied on an old Silver/Black rogue. Second cast, hooked a nice 4 lb smallie, who nailed it as soon as I paused it after a double twitch. Thought I was onto something? An hour later, I caught back-to-back Kentuck's, both right at keeper size. That was it!
Champ188 Posted January 27, 2011 Posted January 27, 2011 Gitnby, like you, I varied mine quite a bit — mostly from 10-20 seconds. i just can't go much more than 20 seconds, especially if the wind's blowing like it was yesterday.
skeeter Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Looking forward to reading all the weekend fishing/catching reports during next week's "Significant Winter Storm " event that NOAA SPGFLD.is now thinking will be hitting the area. Rain(which we badly need)changing to freezing rain(which we never need)and then snow in the Mon. thru Wed. time period. They are predicting the storm will be coming together in the Four Corners region which always spells trouble for us. Get out and enjoy the nice weather while it's here.
Cajunangler Posted January 28, 2011 Posted January 28, 2011 Thanks for the offers from those that responded to my post. It looks like Cyclone Bass and myself and going to try our luck tomorrow at Table Rock. Hopefully we'll find a few takers during the course of the day. At least the weather should be good for getting on the water.
gitnby Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 Fished Saturday from 7 AM to Noon. Saturday nice keeper LM on a jerkbait, and 1 keeper Spot and several other shorts on the float n fly rig. No bites after 9:30. Sunday 6:30 AM to 10 4 lb LM on 3rd cast of the day with X-Rap, only fish of the day. one bite on the grub, missed him. First time tryin the float n fly. Took a while to get the hang of it. 9' 6" rod and 12' leader below float is a challenge, but it is fun to fight the fish on that rod!

Stump bumper Posted January 31, 2011 Posted January 31, 2011 Osrry for asking a dumb question, but what is the float and fly? Basically it is a crappie jig under a floater.
gitnby Posted January 31, 2011 Author Posted January 31, 2011 Basically it is a crappie jig under a floater. 2 differences from what I was doing versus what is shown in video 1. much longer leader 2. shaking it in place, not draggin it in BPS has a kit for it, but I used Punisher jigs, 3 way swivel and a weighted foam float. Some guys use a slip bobber with a bobber stop, but the 1/16 jig is hardly enough weight to pull the line down through the bobber once it hits the water. Can't wait to get back out and use it some more!
