Nature consists of forms of life that eat other forms of life, and that includes animals that kill and eat other animals. Humans have always been omnivores, eating both animals and plants. So while I have no problem with vegans and vegetarians as long as they don't chastise me for eating meat, I also see little wrong with eating meat in general. My wife and I are loca-vores as much as possible. We eat a lot of garden vegetables raised locally (much of them raised by our relatives with our help), do a lot of canning and freezing of vegetables. We buy locally raised beef and pork that is grown more or less organically, we raised and processed our own chickens last year and may do it again this year, we keep laying hens for the eggs, and we eat a lot of wild meat and fish. Other than buying lunch meat from a local butcher shop, we almost never buy meat at the grocers. I think that our eating habits are much better for the environment than the average American's even though we are far from vegetarians.

I usually eat whatever I kill...only major exception is the possums that keep getting into the chicken house and stealing eggs, and the starlings that have suddenly this winter descended upon our bird feeders. As a hunter I don't really like hunting carnivores, because philosophically I prefer eating animals whose ecological niche is as prey. And while I know I wouldn't turn down a shot at a record book whitetail, I don't hunt deer for trophies but for the meat.

We just finished processing four deer, and tonight Mary made snack sticks out of 30 pounds of ground venison. Good stuff!

Most vegetarians eat food that tastes and looks like meat(like veggie burgers), because they were raised eating meat, and meat tastes good, even to vegetarians. I don't know of too many vegetarians who stopped eating meat because it tasted bad. I guess the thing I don't understand is if you care so much about what you eat, then why eat all the heavily processed food (like veggie burgers)? I guess the same reason so many of us eat fast food (no matter how disgusting it is), convenience.

If I had my choice I would only eat meat that came from wild game, and veggies grown locally. But that just isn't going to happen. I got to get things done, and if that means stopping and picking up something on the way, then so be it.

IMO, other than saving a little money, you're not going to get any health benefits from eating wild game, those deer are eating the same pesticide laced corn the cows in the grocery store are.

Some are saying they eat locally grown meat and vegetables that are more organic than grocery store food, that would be a better choice. But who knows if they are really organic?

Most of us don't live on a farm and it is not affordable or practical to eat only organic food. A more practical approach would be to cleanse your body with supplements 2 or 3 times a year for

$40 a pop...much cheaper than buying organic food. Anyway, all nutritionists agree that the American diet needs to be changed to less meat and more vegetables. You're also better off buying only the food around the perimeter of the grocery store,(that's all the perishable stuff), and stay away from the processed food in the middle...even the parasites won't eat that crap.

In defense of Vegans, If you look at your own teeth in the mirror, do you think we were designed to eat more vegetables or meat? I've never seen a predator with teeth like ours, with the exception of our small canine teeth, our teeth look much more like a cow or horse's teeth than a predator.

Also, if you believe in the bible, there is a story in the old testament:

Daniel 1:15-17 (New International Version, ©2010)

15 At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food (meat).

16 So the guard took away their choice food and the wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.

17 To these four young men God gave knowledge and understanding of all kinds of literature and learning. not a bible lesson here but if you take the story as a story, the vegetarians got smarter after 10 days of eating veggies

Hi Mitch

Talk to me about this cleansing deal with supplements.

What is it? Where do you get it?

My wife switched me over to Bible bread and it's good.

SIO3

I get it at Costco, it's called Dual Action Cleanse

You obviously don't live in the Ozarks because there isn't much corn grown around here for deer to eat. Even if deer have access to corn they don't eat it as their main diet for months while they "fatten up". Check the fat content in ground venison vs. ground beef and then tell me there are no health benefits. All we can do is use common sense and do what we think is neccesary to be healthy. We definitely need to eat more veggies (not potatoes, and limit certain kinds of meat, mainly stockyard beef) to be healthier. I think the supplements and cleanses are good also, but yet another shortcut to try to offset our bad habits.

I'm not judging anyone for how they eat, I am far from a good example, but I won't make excuses for why I eat like I do. We all know (or should know) what is good or bad for us, and if we want to eat healthy it can be done in a way that fits our budgets.
