dtrs5kprs Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Bill, that is the same I have always heard regarding the floats. But you know how bass fisherman are...always trying to make something better. Sometimes you end up right (like painted rogues or screw lock shake heads), and sometimes you mess up the beauty of something like a smoke grub on a 1/4oz head by overthinking it and bolting on eyes, extra flake, etc. Would think the fly deal might be even better to the east at Bull Shoals. Is the braid thing new for the deep grub? Always figured it was too visible, but have used it for c-rig main line.
Champ188 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 Tim's had a lot of success for a lot of years on that grub. He's as good with it as anyone I've ever known.
Bill Babler Posted March 1, 2011 Author Posted March 1, 2011 That braid thing is a new. I can remember Sonny and Jerry McCutchen winning a Redman back in the very early 90's doing the same thing. Kicker was Jerry told me they had at least 50 jig heads and grubs already put together as they were loosing from 30 to 50 a day doing this very same thing. They were swimming it deep on 6 lb. mono. With the braid using 20 pound test that is 6 pound diameter in smoke green, and a light wire hook on the grub, you can bend the hook and get your grub back. Buster did not loose a grub on Saturday. Now, here is the deal, some of these guys are fishing the grub verticle in the tree tops, and some are swimming it. On the up and down presentation, I would just use 8 pound seaugar. For the swimming you are going to get caught. Braid for sure. As you all know, Tim and I used to fish team events and did well. He taught me a lot. Main thing was his work ethic. He is a complete fiend at preparation. He is a master of the tube and the grub, deep or shallow. If he gets a shot, he ain't going to miss it. He will catch em. He and Buster won a derby here by culling their entire limit in under 30 minutes prior to the end of a derby. They caught 22 pounds in under 30 minutes after fishing 7 hrs. and only catching a small limit. Tim is relentless and he will never give up, under any circumstance. It would be interesting to see in the history of Bull Shoals and Table Rock what angler had the most wins or top 10' in both lakes tournament history. My bet would be Tim Sainato. He is always a factor on our clear water lakes. Good Luck PS Capt. Donny, good to hear from you. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
denjac Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Da grub. I think its a love it or hate it bait. I am a love it guy. Fished with many in my boat that wont throw it when I am outcatching them 3-1 . They just dont like it and I dont know why. You can scrub it on the bottom, swim it through trees, vertical fish it, use it on a dropshot, trailer for a jig. The only bait I can think of thats is as versital would be the spinnerbait. I use 6-8 lb maxi and maybe lose 2-4 a day. A dozen on a very bad day. 9 times out of 10 they will pop off except for dock cables arrg! If I only had one bait I could use on Table Rock year long that would be it. A little secret with it, dont get too heavy. A 1/4 oz is about as big as I go even in 30ft of water just be patient with it . Those bass love that slow fall vs one streaking for the bottom. Think thats all I have to say about that. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Champ188 Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 Just don't bring that girly man stuff up the river. We don't cotton to that kind of tomfoolery up there.
