Members JLHarrell Posted March 10, 2011 Members Posted March 10, 2011 Hello, I am planning a camping trip to the Bull Shoals State Park on the White River next week for a little fly fishing. I fished the White about 15 years ago(first time fly fishing) before I joined the service and it was a blast! Honestly one of the best fishing trips of my life. 15 years later and 7 deployments later, Uncle Sam has stationed me relatively close to get back to the White River. I am bringing my 7 year old son with me and we plan to wade fish for anything that will bite. Looking for recommendations what fly to fish, where to buy flies, and any other advise you guys can give me. I know a little about the water flow system as I found out the hard way to listen for the horns; however, flies, rigs, etc I have forgotten. Thank you all in advance. John
mic Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 Welcome from a fellow vet. I haven't been to the White so can't help out there, but post a report when your done.
Ham Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 If it were me, I'd swing by Blue Rbbon Fly shop and pick up a free map and some free advice. I usually try to spend 20 bucks or so when I go to a new area at the local fly shop to get what's been working. YOU MUST take your son fishing at Dry Run Creek. He'll be hooked on fishing and you'll have a ball helping him. It's more important than if you get to fish at all. BRF can help you with that as well. I'd recommend 10 ound straight mono and flys in the #8 or #10 size for DRC. There are some monster trout there and big tippitand a big hook help a young fisherman. Barbless Catch and release only on DRC. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
John Berry Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 I second the referral for Blue Ribbon Fly Shop and Dry Run Creek. I also recommend that you buy the Home Waters book. It has a lot of great information. As a combat veteran, let me thank you for your service and wish you luck on our rivers. snagged in outlet 3 Posted March 10, 2011 Posted March 10, 2011 X2 on Blue ribbon fly shop. If you are not within eyesight of the dams you may not hear the horn so watch carefully. Here is the generation number. Call often, especially with kids invovled. 870-431-5311 If you don't take your son to Dry Run Creek you should be water boarded. SIO3 Thanks for your service to this great country!!!
Members JLHarrell Posted March 10, 2011 Author Members Posted March 10, 2011 Thank you all for the wonderful suggestions! I did not know about DRC but I am definitely taking him and his little sister (4) now! I honestly am getting more pumped reading about it than my own fishing adventure! Blue Ribbon Fly shop is a must now as well. Thank you again, and I'll post pictures when I get back! By the way, used to (15 years ago) guide down in the Marshes of Louisiana, so if anyone is looking to score a RED/SPEC while chasing the mullet, fly or not, through the marshes let me know and I'll point you to some spots! Thanks again John
