gotmuddy Posted May 15, 2011 Posted May 15, 2011 The Jetta's TDI is 140hp/236torque on a 2.0l turbo 4... I didn't see (after a cursory Internet search) any solid info on towing capacity, but many articles and such online seem to conclude that it's limited to 2k pounds... (as opposed to the trailering capacities of the midsized truck segment ranging around 2500-3500 lbs and the full sized segment ranging over 4500 lbs) 2k is what I found as well. I havent ever pulled 2k pounds, I would not try to pull a 2k pound boat up a steep ramp. I have no problems with my riverboat but my setup is light. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
Al Agnew Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Yep, you can probably throw gas mileage figures out the window when towing. The smaller the engine the harder it will work, and the harder it works the more it will pull down your gas mileage. Not that it's any real comparison, but I have a 6 cyl mid-size SUV (Toyota Highlander) which is rated for 23 mpg (if I remember correctly) and actually gets around 23 mpg on the highway. But when towing my 16 ft. jetboat, I get about 17 mpg, sometimes less, depending on how heavy my foot is on the gas pedal (which is directly correlated to how anxious I am to get to the river and start fishing, which means it's usually pretty heavy). Before that, I had the Highlander hybrid, which at the time was a somewhat smaller, lighter vehicle. It got around 27 mpg, but 17 mpg pulling the boat.
gotmuddy Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 my bug gets 25mpg towing. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
denjac Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 Hey, calm down!! I got used ones too... Seriously though... I dunno where you're getting your mileage figures, but It's been my experience (10 years in the used auto business, specializing in trucks) that the V-6 will get within 10% of the mileage of a midsize truck for the same trip and BETTER mileage when hauling that load.. (a GM I4 manual has a total trailering capacity of just 2400lbs as opposed to the full sized V-6's 5400 lb capacity... so when you ARE hauling OR traveling over 55mph you'll be cranking twice the RPM's) Since you are buying used I assume longevity of powertrain life would come into play... The full sized truck won't work as hard as the midsize, that should lend to a longer (more maintenance free) life... If you're less than stoked about a truck getting truck mileage, imagine how incensed you'll be when that little 4 banger blows up from being overworked.. Just trying to give some solid advice.... (and now that I've advised you I simply must insist that you buy your vehicle from me at a maximum profit margin :rubs_palms_together:) What fish said is true. Start adding up maintenance and oil usage on the smaller trucks if your working them and the fuel savings goes right out the window. I know your pulling light tows but I sure hate being underpowered , and getting pushed threw a stop sign isnt any fun either. Dennis Boothe Joplin Mo. Thanks, most folks don't realize that towing capacities aren't normally set so much by how much a vehicle can pull, but how much it can safely stop.. gotmuddy Posted May 16, 2011 Posted May 16, 2011 It has been my experience that a ford v-6 ranger will get better mileage towing than a 4 cup and only slighltly worse when not towing. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

Just a heads up, they hold their value and are sought after used. In my opinion they're the best fuel efficint vehicle idea on the road.

On the used market folks do tend to avoid the ones who have had the guts pulled out of them... But hey, what do I know...? cricket.c21.com
