eric1978 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Yep. It's skinny but floatable. Lots of obstacles. I'd start below the trout water.
Al Agnew Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 People have floated it from Lane Spring down, but it's pretty small up there. I've floated it from Milldam Hollow to the Gasconade, catching trout in the first two or three miles and smallies below.
ness Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 Since the F5 earthquake the other day, the river is running uphill into the crack, where it goes dry. Dead and dying trout everywhere. I always knew the Newburg Fault was gonna be the first one to go. Spread the word. Thanks buddy. John
Gavin Posted June 9, 2011 Posted June 9, 2011 You most certainly can but you will probably need to run your own shuttle. I've floated from Lane all the way down to I-44 over the course of several trips but its been awhile.....Plus, there is allot of dead water due to cattle & gravel mining, and it doesnt get logged...There can be some hairy log jams to portage..Its good in spots though...every place you find good habitat holds fish.
Ted Calcaterra Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 I sure hope you can otherwise I'm trespassing. It's a navigable stream by my definition. I'm sure I'll get tested soon,
ozark trout fisher Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 I sure hope you can otherwise I'm trespassing. It's a navigable stream by my definition. I'm sure I'll get tested soon, That's an ever present thought in my mind...Is Little Piney navigable? Personally I believe strongly that it is, at least below Lane Spring. That would determine the legality of fishing in the Vida Slab stretch particularly, along with most of the river below where it flows out of the the National Forest property. I have heard that some landowners in that area have given anglers trouble, although that is not something that I can say that has ever happened to me. My personal policy on situations like that, is keep fishing the stream if you think it's navigable and don't let anyone tell you otherwise, but be extra careful to be on your best behavior on the stream and do your best to keep the peace with the landowners. It is important that landowners on that creek see most fisherman as being responsible, relatively quiet types who pick up after themselves and leave the place better than they found it. That's especially crucial on a creek like Little Piney where there may be some gray area.
ColdWaterFshr Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Its floatable from Lane year round. I've put in there 3 or 4 times right at the campground, and once at the 63 bridge.
Gavin Posted June 14, 2011 Posted June 14, 2011 Definitely floatable...I'd want it to be around 200cfs on the Newburg Guage and no more than 300cfs or so...Its a long narrow drainage and subject to flash flooding...dont do it with heavy rain in the forecast. Put in & take out suggestions....63 bridge, Lane Spring, Vida Slab, Mill Dam Hollow, USFS Fire Ring(aka the Goat Farm), Newburg Bridge, Grotto Bridge, I-44, or Jerome on the G. Nade. There are some nice rip rap holes were the creek intersects the rail line on the north side of the creek when you get down near Newburg. Cheers.
