yaknar Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 Kayaked down the James yesterday morning.I didn't expect to catch many in the warm and shallow water, but I did catch the usual pumpkinseeds, greens and goggle-eye. I caught 3 small in the shallow water, the bigger ones were in the deep holes. They all hit and fought hard, and most jump 2 or 3 times while I was trying to land them. I didn't take many pictures as I was trying to get them back in the water quickly. A few were able to throw the lure. The lure I caught the most and biggest on were 1/2oz yabbies. I also caught a cat. I saw at lest 15 beer cans on the way down. I have no way to haul them in my kayak, so I'm going to start bringing a bag. Does anyone else bring a bag to gather up trash like cans? I would like the kind they give you when you rent a canoe. I also tried out a different rod holder.

I usually just toss what I find in the bottom of the canoe. You can get some mesh laundry bags that work pretty good and are easy to wash or just swing by Hootentown Canoe Rental and they will usually give you a couple.
TroutRinger Posted July 22, 2011 Posted July 22, 2011 What section did you float? and can you tell me about that rod holder? I like that a lot. Is the foam holding it in the cupholder and where did you get the actual holder? "Of all the liars among mankind, the fisherman is the most trustworthy." eric1978 Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 You can usually find those mesh laundry bags Ronnie mentioned at the dollar store...buck a piece. They're so cheap you can just pitch the whole kit 'n caboodle at the end of the day.
Flysmallie Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Cool deal on the Dollar Store. Next time I'm in there in my waders I'll pick up a few. I really just now paid attention to the rod holder. You made that didn't you? Looks good. Is that a foam noodle it's mounted in.
Jack Jones Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I second that Ringer....I want to know about the rod holder. Of course, I also want to know about the Yabbies....rigging, etc.. Chief Grey Bear Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 Nice job on the fishing! Even though it is hot, the bite seems to still be very good. If you stop by the MDC office in Springfield, they will give you all the bags you want. RSBreth Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 You'll find tons of empties anywhere from Hootentown on down this time of year - pick up a bag from the MDC like Chief said or just use the cheapest lawn bags - that's what I do. I sometimes have a big pile o' trash to take home and throw away at the end of summertime James trip (although I usually pitch it the dumpster of the convenience store I'm buying "barley pop" from on the way home). It's unfortunate and unsightly, but thankfully it doesn't really hurt much but the view. Don't get me started on folks actually polluting the river...
Ham Posted July 23, 2011 Posted July 23, 2011 I usually carry other folks trash out every trip. Sometimes people abandon full mesh bags full of trash on the river. At more popular takeouts, people throw the re-usable bags away with the trash in them. I empty the trash and save the bag. Be careful when boating in Arkansas. I'd hate you you to get a BIG ticket for someone else's trash. Loose cans in the bottom of your canoe, will earn you a fine of over $100 each or so I observed on the Caddo one day. MO has the same laws, but Arkansas enforces theirs. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
