Billfo Posted July 27, 2011 Posted July 27, 2011 We spent a nice long 5 day weekend on Big Indian. Fished from Big Indian to Baxter. Dispite the heat, caught lots of short Bass and 3 keepers all on soft plastics (green to purple). Did I mention hot ? We didnt make it to Aquapolusa just cause the heat. We DID see a Copperhead swimming at our dock on Big Indian. Got a very close look at him before he dove under. Confirmed what I seen at the Conservatory. Also there was a long black snake about as round as a golf ball, but did not see how long as we has going over our neighbors retaining wall.. I will give him the benifit of the doubt & consider him posionous & I will stay away from there ! Visiting "brother in law" had a good time.. * Shepherd of the Hills conservatory was cool. * Cudos to the friendly people at Baxter Marina. * Cosmic Caverns is way too small. * Ripleys "Believe it or Not" is a bit cheesey. * Nice T-shirts at the Bearded Clam (LOL) * "The Roudy Beaver" was slow, it took 45 minutes to get burgers. * Missed out on my favorite CornDogs at the Carr Lane station on 86 Note to self: Stock up on Dramamine for visitors (and dogs) who are not use to the rolling & twisting roads ! Email me Red-Right-Returning is for quitters !
Champ188 Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 Don't sweat the big black snake. He's not poisonous.
Members Hillbilly Deluxe Posted July 28, 2011 Members Posted July 28, 2011 How about this snake? Kind of looks like a copperhead but I didn't want to disturb his breakfast to ask! Took this picture this past Sunday morning where the White River channel swings close to the rock bluff near the dam. Brian www.outdoorguysradio.com
Bill Babler Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 He is really dark for a Copperhead, and HUGE. Never seen a Head that dark or that big. That for sure is a Mature snake. Copperheads are almost a yellow gold, and usually not that big. Have to look that one up, he might be. Good Idea to leave it in piece. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
Members Hillbilly Deluxe Posted July 28, 2011 Members Posted July 28, 2011 The snake was about 2' long. It was lighter than it looks in the picture as it was very early in the morning and light was low. I think it's a water snake, but after looking through MDC snake idetification I'm still not sure. Bird Watcher Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 Northern Banded Water Snake. They come in a few different color phases.
gitnby Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 Northern Banded Water Snake. They come in a few different color phases. I agree! I see them all the time on the shoreline by the house.
Flysmallie Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 * Ripleys "Believe it or Not" is a bit cheesey. Indeed.
Martin Posted July 28, 2011 Posted July 28, 2011 And copperheads don't really like the water all that much. They can swim, but only if they are escaping from something or somebody. The dark area's on a copperhead look kind of like a bow tie, and copperheads have almost a pinkish hue in their brown. The big Black snakes are great. Not poisenous, and they eat alot of mice and small chipmunks and critters that reek havic with insulation and boat wiring.. lol and your phone line wire.
