Justin Spencer Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Took my 8 year old out for youth season this year, and on Sunday night finally got a shot at his first deer. Happy to have gotten it on video although not quite the quality of some of Wise's creations. Kind of shakes your confidence when after a week of practice and making sure he knows where to shoot it, when you say put it on her shoulder and he says "What's a shoulder?" you think o crap. You may be able to hear us discussing shot placement prior to the big shot. Killed it with a .221 fireball, deer only went 30 yards on a liver shot, but not a drop of blood. Only today when I skinned it did I see the entrance wound, bullet lodged on the hide on the opposite side. Trout Commander Posted November 7, 2011 Posted November 7, 2011 Awesome! You didn't have to tell him twice did ya?! I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack

Justin Spencer Posted November 7, 2011 Author Posted November 7, 2011 He did kill er' good. Glad I took the video camera along, something we will enjoy watching for years and years. What is the definition of a shoulder? It is right behind the neck on a deer and above the front leg right? I had put an orange target on my archery deer target over the vitals and had him practice where to put the crosshairs, and on Friday when we shot his gun there were 4 does about 75 yards from our range that he was able to watch through his scope and we talked over where to put the crosshairs. I was certain he knew where to aim, but must say I was a little nervous when he acted like his typical self "clueless". Must say it was probably a bigger thrill for me than him, now we just need to teach him to gut and cut up his own deer. Gavin Posted November 8, 2011 Posted November 8, 2011 Good Job Pappa!..I have a feeling that you will be processing another deer or two for him soon!
Justin Spencer Posted November 8, 2011 Author Posted November 8, 2011 Grilled some tenderloin last night and Eli who won't hardly eat 2 bites of steak ate quite a bit, and Molly like usual eats as much meat as anyone. Eli was busy making sure everyone enjoyed the meat, you could see how proud he was to have provided the meat for dinner, pretty cool.
