ozark trout fisher Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 I really like the Parachute Royal Wulff, but I consider it more of a broken water fly. It's just too much of an attractor to be all that effective in calm water. For the dead calm water on the little creeks (or on the larger rivers for that matter), I think it's really important to have a good dial on whatever hatches are coming off. And whatever is hatching, it always seems to help to be tossing a fly that is both pretty imitative and a size or so smaller than the naturals. For some reason that often seems to help a lot. Most of the time I don't want to mess with all the complications involved in fishing the dead still water and just toss attractors in the riffles. I must admit I enjoy that a good deal more.
fishinwrench Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Mike Mercer's Missing Link is an insanely good slow water dry. Try one in Camel brown and/or green apple, size 14-16. They are a tricky tie, but well worth it. You can google up a SBS or buy them online.
RSBreth Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 You can't go wrong with a Madame X or Elk Hair Caddis - I tie a Deer Hair Caddis with a bit of bright colored hair on top for visibility. Crane Creek trout eat it up in either 14 or 16. I have never had to go smaller than 16 there - but Blue Spring might be different - haven't been there in years.
Kayser Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 #8 stimulator for calm water- long leader, long drifts. A #16 black ant also works well. If the fish are midging, I tie a simple midge on a #22 short-shank emerger hook (straight eye, oversized)- a few short grizzly hackle fibers for a tail, thread body (cream, 10/0, kept thin for the grizzly color to show through), and 2-3 turns of the right sized grizzly hackle. It's caught more fish than I can count on the trico falls, and is an awesome midge pattern when they're rising. It will ride on it's side if you grease it, with the hook laying flat on the surface of the water, and I prefer to fish it behind another dry to help me pick up on strikes. This also allows you to fish it 'drowned', which accounts for about half the fish. A #14 parachute adams is normally my point fly. Rob WARNING!! Comments to be interpreted at own risk. Time spent fishing is never wasted.
Trout Commander Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 #8 stimulator +1 I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted. The latest Trout Commander blog post: Niangua River Six Pack
mic Posted November 15, 2011 Author Posted November 15, 2011 #8 stimulator for calm water- long leader, long drifts. Rob Kayser and TC, A number 8 stimulator on flat water, small streams, really? I would have never imagined that...figuring it would be to big. What is your favorite reciepe as I know there are many? Really a size 8, never would have thunk it.

Is this your receipe? http://flytyingclub....rs-missing-link I can't tell from the pic. How is the dun hackle wrapped?
ness Posted November 15, 2011 Posted November 15, 2011 Welp, looks like it's unanimous! I'll generally root around and find something about the same size and color of the last bug I saw fly by. If there's nothing in the air I'll go with a small Adams, EHC, BWO, or white Cahill, roughly in that order, or I might grab something else if my tummy tells me to. And, I'll lengthen and/or size down my tippet to 6 or 7x to improve my odds of a strike. Or not. I find myself tying on two dries a lot lately -- one I can see and one I think the trout will eat 12 to 18 inches off the 'indicator' fly, but not always. Hope this helps. John

Well that pic wasn't taken at Taney! The fish pictured was caught about a foot worth of drift into the calm water after drifting the riffle. If you are hung up on the size just think of all of the big hairy spiders, wooly worms and other creatures you see bushwhacking your way to and down those wild streams. I like the stimi with barred legs and a little flash. I don't know if the fish care though. I have spent most of my money on fly fishing and beer. The rest I just wasted.
