skeeter Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 We heard/saw flock after flock of Snow Geese migrating South the past few days with incredible numbers of huge flocks going over the house yesterday. I'd guesstimate upwards of 500-600 birds in some flocks that were flying together and spread over a large part of the sky. The Boss decided we had to do some early evening Christmas shopping just after dark and while on the parking lot, more large flocks were flying over so low that the parking lot lights were enough to see them by. In view of next week's weather forecast for the Ozarks, I'd say these guys are doing the right thing at the right time.
RSBreth Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 Not to be a nit-picker, but if you saw the same flocks I saw the past few days they were lesser and greater Canada's. Snow geese fly at higher altitudes and in flocks numbering in the thousands.

If snows are actively feeding in an area they will fly low as well, if they are migrating, your are right....they fly higher than the Canadas. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
skeeter Posted December 3, 2011 Author Posted December 3, 2011 The daytime as well as the nightime flocks were definitely Snows. Very high, maybe 1000 feet + as a guesstimate and in their usual huge flocks taking up acres of space in the sky. They always sound like a party flying over and you almost always hear them before you see them. One of nature's wonders being able to exert all that energy to fly and still yapping away to beat the band. Thoroughly enjoy seeing their display and their numbers every year both in the Spring and the Fall.
Feathers and Fins Posted December 3, 2011 Posted December 3, 2011 They are snows NO DOUBT the call is diffrent and Honkers are not white.. I sat under thousands of them today and none wanted to come into gunning range. The ducks on the other hand were very nice. Im supprised to see the numbers of ringers and teal still around. Honkers were in the area but locked on to a corn field pretty heavy. Some specks even seen and one that wont be making it to my grandfathers farm in sear https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856

ness Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 Saw a bozillion snows on the ground up around Squaw Creek NWR a couple weeks ago. John
Feathers and Fins Posted December 4, 2011 Posted December 4, 2011 I've heard the specks are the best to eat! Prepared right I can line Speck, Snow, Ross and Honker out on a table and no one can tell the differance. Skin on though Specks are best of the goose but NOTHING beats Sandhills for the table. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Beaver-Lake-Arkansas-Fishing-Report/745541178798856
RSBreth Posted December 5, 2011 Posted December 5, 2011 I could here the Snow's all last night - it sounded like every one in North America was passing by.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted December 5, 2011 Root Admin Posted December 5, 2011 Here too. Sounded like there were thousands overhead last night and heard them all night. I kept the window open above the bed and heard them even when I got up at 5 this morning though not as many. I called Duane about 9 pm and he said they were over him too. He was hitting them with a spot light. The ones over us last night were low and circling. Duane said his were too and thought they'd be on the lake this morning. I know where he is right now!
