BackCastingGolfer Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Title says it all. I can't decide. I would mainly be floating the James River, with the occasional lake outing. I think I'm leaning the pontoon route, edpecially when thinking about mounting a trolling motor later on.
Gavin Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Solo canoe........or that Jackson Coosa SOT kayak....Toons are nice but very limited.....better to borrow or rent...do not own.
sean c Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Toons are very stable, easy to get in and out of and easier to haul around(I just throw mine in the bed of my pick up) than most yaks or canoes but I much rather paddle, fish from and haul gear in a canoe or yak. If I was in the market for a fly fishing yak I would have a hard time deciding between a Native ultimate, the Jackson Coosa or its big brother I think its called the Cuda and the Diablo kayak.
BackCastingGolfer Posted January 25, 2012 Author Posted January 25, 2012 I'm looking at the trout unlimited colorado pontoon, I also found an ocean kayak big yak pretty cheap. Still going to look around for awhile, I need a new rotary vise far worse than a pontoon or kayak right now.
mic Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Al post a cool ride awhile back that he really liked. Anyone remember where the thread is?
Gavin Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Think Al got a Watermaster raft... http://www.bigskyinflatables.com/WM_Models_and_Specs.html I'd take one of those over a toon anyday. Packable, lightweight, and no frame to mess with...the only downside is the price.
mic Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 Think Al got a Watermaster raft... Thanks...found the thread http://forums.ozarkanglers.com/index.php?showtopic=30164&hl=watermaster&fromsearch=1
Ham Posted January 25, 2012 Posted January 25, 2012 I like yaks over pontoons because of wind issues, but boat boats offer advantages. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
BackCastingGolfer Posted January 26, 2012 Author Posted January 26, 2012 I'm not going to be able to spend more than 350 dollars. I'm still leaning toward the pontoon, I live in a small apt, and have no clue where I'd put a yak.

Your limited storage options are a major consideration, but the ability to pack it up to stow it away is going to be just about the only advantage a toon will offer you over a yak or canoe. You should do yourself a favor and take Gavin's advice...and keep your solo canoe at a buddy's house or in some rented storage. You can usually get an Old Town Guide 119 on sale at Dick's for around $350. I believe that's what I paid for mine.
