Bill Babler Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Since we are so much all about the A-Rig thought I would give you some heads up. I have 2 reels for sale on Buy Sell Trade. If your interested please take a look see. If you have a favorite "Big Game" reel, let us know what you have. Be very interesting to see what kind of a winder everyone is using for this MESS. http://whiteriveroutfitters.com http://whiteriverlodgebb.com
dtrs5kprs Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I've used one of the older 300 Curados for big FB jigs, full size c-rigs. Right now it has a hitch in it, needs to see a doctor, but it handles big weights and long casts ok when well. You could probably do ok with something like an old 5500 Ambassadeur, used to run them for pike up north, or the 6500 size. Or a Penn surf reel with the little lever. Either one . We are all going to start looking like we are snagging spoonies out of season.
motoman Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I've used Curado 301e's for years on larger swimbaits; and it handles the a-rig wonderfully. - Great price for those 300's too Bill! If they were lefties, I'd have to grab one.:-)
cullinby9 Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 I rigged the rod the other day an abu garcia 4600 c4. unretired it's been on the shelf for a few years.
Sprint21fter Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 Been using the KVD Quantum series that sold for $100 last year and have not had a problem.
FishinCricket Posted February 10, 2012 Posted February 10, 2012 What? You don't need a REEL for an A-Rig.. I distinctly remember someone saying you just throw it out in the water and the lunkers just jump into your boat! Alternative comment (if the above didn't annoy you): OOOOMMMMGGGGG, yet another a-rig thread.. That's JUST what we need! :rolls_eyes_exhasperatedly: cricket.c21.com
Quillback Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I've got a Calcutta 200 that I used for the first time the other day for A-rigs. Worked well.
edyer Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I've got a Calcutta 200 that I used for the first time the other day for A-rigs. Worked well. I have used a 200 Curado and might try out a 6500 Ambassador that I bought to throw Musky baits. The A-Rig I bought from Andy Poss last October came with instructions to use 80 - 100 pound braid. I have been throwing it with 50 pound braid and have heard guys saying they are using 25 pound mono and flouro-carbon. What are yiu guys putting on that reel you use for the A-Rig?
jeb Posted February 11, 2012 Posted February 11, 2012 I started throwing them on a Johnny Morris Gold 7:1 reel. And it worked fine for it. But I recently purchased a Calcutta TE200GT pretty much just for throwing A-rigs. And it's working great. I really like the 5:1 ratio better. Makes it easier to slow roll it, which seems to be the most effective way to fish it. And I appreciate how much easier it is to crank it with those big gears. The only downside is it does not hold a lot of 65lb braid. I may swap it for my Calcutta 250DC at some point, for the 250's larger capacity. Nice reels, Bill! I'm sure they'll sell fast at those prices. John B 08 Skeeter SL210, 225F Yamaha

I spooled up with 50# Spiderwire stealth, only used it once so far, but seemed to work well, very castable. I use the braid primarily so I can pull the A-rig off snags. The A-rig works real well as a brush pile locater.
