duckydoty
Bps outfits are a cheaper way to get into fly fishing and will do the job. A good dvd or video on casting will help alot on different casting techniques. A book might even help some. Best way to learn is get an idea of what is expected and how to achieve that goal through techniques, then get out and practice, practice, practice. Are you sure you want to get into this............There is no turning back once you start.... A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Daryk Campbell Sr
A couple of years ago there was a large demonstration at Bass Pro in St Charles/Offallon. They had people there who were very helpful in showing/teaching beginners and anyone who would listen how to hold/cast/reel a flyrod. I have never held one before that and they got me feeling pretty confident in the standard and roll cast. I bought a complete model, don't know the details, from Bass Pro. The people there told me that it would catch a fish just as well as any other model. I paid approx. $80.00 for a rod, reel, and sleeve/case. The reel was already strung by the manufacturer. I have caught a couple fish on it. I have lost a few flies also. It is fun. I couldnt tell you if I lost any fish since it didn't cost me a thousand, but I am still happy none the less. Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. (me) I am the master of my unspoken words, and the slave to those that should have remained unsaid. (unknown)

No need to go fancy to start out. For the first year and a half I fly fished, I used a cheapo (I think it cost $50 for the rod, reel and line together) from Walmart and it worked fine...It's still my back up fly rod and I use it on occasion. As for lessons...You'll be able to figure it out on your own eventually. If I was able to anyone can; I am the most uncoordinated person on earth, and the least naturally suited to fly fishing. That said, taking lessons would speed up the process and spare you from a lot of the trial and error and bad casting habits, etc, that I picked up teaching myself. So if it's possible for you to get lessons I would encourage it, but it isn't absolutely necessary.
FishinCricket
BPS has a sale starting the 24th, they have two different combo set ups for $50-100 ... If your fishig exclusively for trout then go with about a 5 weight... And be prepared to shell out some dough for flies, tippet, leader, etc... Good luck! cricket.c21.com

What he really should consider doing is going in to Charlie Readings with a pocketful of cash.. First words outta your mouth should be "Darn near didn't get here cause of how these daggum greedy politicians got the price of fuel all jacked up!" Then follow that immediately with "I am looking to get a fly fishing set up, power bait just ain't no fun no more.." Oh, and wear a helmet... cricket.c21.com
ness
I think the most beneficial thing for learning would be to cozy up to an experienced fly fisherman and get them to show you the ropes. John

BackCastingGolfer
Right now BPS is selling a combo called the "Bugger", for the price it is an awesome combo. I would stay away from the Dogwood Canyon setups...I jut don't like the feel, but the next step up is the Hobbs Creek, solid stuff.
