dtrs5kprs Posted February 28, 2012 Posted February 28, 2012 I make my own, you have to modify a regular football head Do-It mold with a dremel tool to make enough room for the wire. The wire is from Mason, it's the same wire used to make musky leaders. You need 7 strand woven wire around .023" diameter. I bend the ends so they won't pull out. Also you need to heat the exposed ends of the wire with a torch then dip them in powder paint to keep them from unraveling. That is the same wire I use in little heads, including the ones pictured and in wacky heads using the do-it mold. Good tip on the ends of the guards, I just twist them back on occasion while fishing. For most of my other wire guards I use a nylon coated leader material, usually 60#-90# or so. Turns out like some of the Chompers heads or the Hairy Bug jigs. Good looking FB. As to the dremel tweak, I just cut one side of the mold, two parallel grooves, using a cutting wheel. Does not need to be deep. Molds the wires in straight, just spread them or cross them when painted. If you foul up or don't like it, just JB weld that area and grind it back to smooth,
Members kirbydog Posted March 14, 2012 Members Posted March 14, 2012 I always thin out the stiff plastic weed guard-usually just leave 5-6 bristles and splay them out so they're not all togeather. And I like the chompers stand up head with a 4 or 5" twin tailed grub. Like said, I'd rather loose a few more jigs than fish.
