I've never run across any one smart enough to paddle the canoe well and dumb enough to do it for me.

His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974

As others have said, flyfishing from a solo canoe isn't easy. It can be done, though. When you think about it, it's not the fact that you are sitting low to the water, it's that you are SITTING. You are no closer to the water than you would be if you were standing in water midway up your thighs, but you have to practice to get used to casting from a sitting position. You can, if you get in a lot of practice, keep the canoe in some semblance of position to make quality casts (as long as the wind isn't blowing much). You just have to anticipate what the current is going to do to the canoe, and make your corrective strokes before you reach the optimum position for a good cast. The other important thing is to keep the area in front of you clear of ANYTHING that can snag your line.

So, I know you said canoe, but have you ever seen the freedom hawk kayaks? Saw one in a fly shop in Nashville...have never seen them in action, but the idea seems pretty genius to me. Obviously the outriggers wouldn't be the best in water with much current, but in slower water these would probably be the most stable one man paddle craft out there. I have actually been considering getting one for myself, but I'd like to demo or rent one before buying...

Ahh....Woodman, you assume I have both pride and shame. Rest assured, those traits are long gone. I would consider something that ugly, LOL. I am actually starting to narrow down my wish lists after reading everyone's input and seeing their posts. I appreciate all of it. One thing about me is that before I lay money down on anything I research the hell out of it, obsess about it for a it, and then, if I can live without for a few months, I buy it. I've never had anything but regret about those items I needed right now!

And somehow you managed to end up with a Ford Focus?

Cricket, that one was more economics than anything at the time...besides I've done well with that little car, especially on gas.
