joeD Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Replacement trebles? Hmmm. What about, say, replacement crankbaits? Sorry, I forgot. Tinkerers. There is nothing out there that can't be improved through the judicious use of "fiddling about." Carry on.
Al Agnew Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Mitch, on the light wire vs. heavy wire hook thing...I suspect that it might depend upon the rod and line being used. If you're using a fairly heavy power rod and strong line, then I think the flex of the light wire hook might come into play. In that case, the heavier hook might penetrate better. But if you're using lighter tackle, then I suspect you don't get enough power into the hookset to flex a light wire hook much, and in that case the thinner wire hook would penetrate better. The hooks I refuse to use are the trebles with the barb on the outside of the bend. The reason is that if I get a hook into myself, I want to be able to use the rope trick to get it out, and you can't do it with those outside barbs.

Gavin Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 Usually go with sharp, followed by cheap...and then a dunk in the pool to check the action on some baits. Our pool isnt open yet.
rps Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I don't have any handy to give the particulers, but the ones Bill Babler uses are first rate. He touted the death traps.
Quillback Posted April 30, 2012 Posted April 30, 2012 I go for the best of both worlds, Daichi Deathtraps on jerkbaits, some topwaters, and minnow type lures, the KVD Mustad Ultrapoints on cranks that are banging off cover.
Mitch f Posted April 30, 2012 Author Posted April 30, 2012 I have been using those trebles for two or three years with great success. I cant wait for the trokar trebles to come out though. I think I'd be scared to use Trokar trebles. Those things are dangerously sharp and just thinking of having six of those flying at you on a crank that's been spit from a fish is frightening. I foresee a lot of those being cut from fishermens skin. I've always been a little leery of the cutting point hooks, they are extremely sharp and penetrate well but I've always thought that cutting/tearing a hole in the fish's mouth could eventually wallow out bigger than the original hole when the fish shakes around and fights. The hole will then be bigger and the fish could throw the bait. I also think although sharp at first, they wont hold an edge as long as a sharpened needle point. gotmuddy Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 my experience with trokar hooks so far has been offset shank 1/0 hooks and they have worked great. no fish have shook them yet. everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.
riverfish Posted May 1, 2012 Posted May 1, 2012 mitch is right i picked up some trokar straight shank flippin hooks and had a ball the first time out the only problem was my best fish of the day near seven lb i figure threw my hook i truly believe the point of penetration was wollard out and cut to death i noticed on some of the fish that i was catching when i went to remove the hook the hole was significanly bigger from being cut as the fish fought it almost fell out i think i may still use them though on long cast situations such as big worms etc. for easier penetration at a greater distance
