Jason I generally only target on the old trusty corn them when it gets really hot mid summer. I can drive 8 miles, sit on my butt and catch close to a dozen fish, some pushing #20 on occasions. My preference would be to catch them on the fly. It seems that all the successful carp flies are easy to tie with a minimum of materials and that is another plus.

At the risk of being drawn and quartered, they probably average the same size as big LM's and generally outfight them.

I agree with you Wayne on the fight. I have never understood why more people don't go for them just for the fight. Oh well, more for us to enjoy.

I have read some interesting ways to cook carp on this and other sites, may be something I'll try this summer. Carpe Carp. :-)

I am not about to cook one... but I do love the way they fight. They dont do alot of acrobatics, but I have never had a big brown trout pull as hard as a big carp. Ive gotten some pretty good takes too- had one carry my fly about three feet sideways before I smoked the barrel on him and broke off. Its funny how sometimes you set the hook and they dont run right away- its like they just get a little annoyed at first. Then they feel you pulling and take off like a duramax.

I've never bait fished for them, but I have a high hook-up rate when fishing a 1/16oz or 1/8 oz olive or brown maribou jig. I've only done it standing in my canoe. If you put it in their field of vision without spooking them, it's game on almost every time. Even cruising fish will go after the jig.

While It's been decades since I've eaten one it has also been decades since I've eaten a lot of varieties. I still occasionaly eat crappie, whites or stocked trout, but that is about it. Once you factor out the eating part, carp fishing suddenly becomes a whole different ballgame when you realize they will readily take a fly. I'm sure a person who didn't fly fish could target them with small jigs like Hoglaw has.

Under C & R they do fit the game fish format.

HOLY COW F&F, 4lb and ultralight combo? LMAO!!! you the man!. I have caught many carp on 10lb test in local ponds and some have broken 10/12 lb line with a very generous drag set. I have not broken any rods, but was worried more than a couple times.

A good bait on spincast is canned corn dipped in imitation vanilla (the cheapest you can get), do not lay you poles down unattended, DO NOT LAY YOUR POLES DOWN UNATTENDED. they will disapear.

Yea my wife lost one of my Rods, week later I snagged it,took it home cleaned it up.She was fishing with it again.Fish pullit in the Lake,I snagged it again with 5 pound Carp on it.

My best fly so far has been a short shank hook with some dumb bell eyes with a black marabou tail. The body is just the marabou wrapped around the hook. Landed three fatty carp on it today. One was a mirror carp which was cool.
