Picked my first mater this AM, came off an Early Girl bush variety set in a container. Took a gamble and planted it in March when we had that 80 degree weather. Usually don't get my first one until late June.

It was a crazy winter and spring! I have broccoli plants that lived through the winter and I have been picking broccoli from them for almost a whole year.

I tried to start some broccoli from seed a few years ago in August, hoping to get broccoli through the fall at least. They came up, but the dang bugs chowed down the plants. Might try again this year.

I planted my maters way earlier than I should have, too. I've picked about a half dozen off three plants...just little golf ball sized green ones and chucked 'em in the woods. It's too early to let the plants put all their energy into the fruits, IMO.

Did you guys start from seed, or buy plants? I'd be surprised to see plants as early as you're talking about. But you'd also have had to start the seed way early.

Geez. I guess I didn't realize they sold them that early.

I started mine from seed in Feb and they were less than a foot tall when they went in the ground a few weeks back. Tallest is maybe 2 feet right now.

Yeah my plants are from Wally World. Like Eric's they're 3 feet tall at least. All due to the warm spring, last year it was so cold and wet they weren't growing worth a hoot. I'm worried we're going to have another long hot summer which will screw things up.
