I generally agree, I'm just extending that philosophy to "modern" music. Just because it's the best selling or most visible doesn't necessarily mean it's the highest quality- but that's true of any art or music.

To us, Flapper accessories, Victorian clothing and even hippie garb has become a costume, yet that was typical wear of the times, To Lady Gaga, I suspect that the purpose is only to draw attention to herself. You surely can't think that many of the stage outfits for her and others are comfortable.
