jdmidwest Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Since the original posting, Reeds Cabins at the top of the hill has a full service fly shop open now. Full line of tying materials, flies, rods, reels, and waders. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Gavin Posted February 2, 2012 Posted February 2, 2012 Reeds has a great selection of tackle...Shop there instead of the Park store.
joeD Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 The reason Mauntauk doesn't have a fly shop is because they don't NEED a fly shop. Probably never will. No reason to. Their modus operandi with regard to fishermen really hasn't changed for years. It doesn't seem to hurt or bother them. People and their money show up year after year. Why change? Besides, why, as flyfishermen, do we need one there? We have more sh** than we know what to do with. We make female "croppers" and home woodworking hobbyists look positively Luddite in our flyfishing accoutrement.

I would hope we do need one there or Reed's Cabin shop is doomed. I would hope that everyone here stop in and see the shop, which is first class, stocked with more flies that I see at most city fly shops, waders, rods, reels, fly tying tools and material. Darrell Bently has been reporting on fishing at the park here and now doing audible, call-in reports weekly.
Gavin Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Joe, I assume your comments were in regard to the park lodge...I agree that they have a poor selection, and the food was awful on our last visit...Reed's tackle selection is top notch. Take a peak on your next visit.
Idylwilde Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Joe: Here is a peek inside the shop, just in case you drove by without noticing. Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
Idylwilde Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 I would like to add also in defence of the Montauk Resort Lodge, we all work together to try and make everyone's visit to the Current River a pleasure. They offer things that Reed's don't, and Reed's have things the Lodge don't have. Even Happy Pappy's Campground & store has things none of the others have, they have great pies and wine. Everyone working together is the only way the area can be successful. Take a Child Fishing they are the future of the sport.
Nortrad Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 Happy Pappy's does have top-notch pies...mmm...
dave potts Posted February 3, 2012 Posted February 3, 2012 That looks like quite a nice shop at Reed's. Hope he does well. Dave

What does that make me if I have a garage full of wood working equipment and a basement full of fishing equipment?
