Members RodMcC Posted June 27, 2012 Members Posted June 27, 2012 New to the forum, I thought I'd get my line wet and post the results of fishing Allenton Access tonight. Still new to the area moving here from Wisconsin late last year, I discovered Allenton Access tonight and gave it a go. Being about 5 minutes door to water, I'm hoping Allenton can begin to pay-off eventually because tonight was tough sledding, but is darned convenient. Having read many of your posts earlier, I tossed many of your favorites and some of my own without any success. Check that. I nearly forgot that I caught an 18" channel cat on a Zara Puppy. Sliding him back into the water, I was glad for the bonus fish, but was wondering if others are having to work as hard in your favorite spots. I worked small shad cranks, a favorite melon-purple flake grub, plenty of top-waters like the puppy, tiny torps and buzzbaits I guess the first question I should ask is, "what do you think of Allenton?" Allenton looked promising as I looked downstream from the launch. Trudging downsteam, only later did I discover a walking path along the shore, I worked plenty of riffles and pools downstream from the launch without too much cooperation from the locals. Beautiful water. Tough bite. Maybe, I tried forcing the top-water action some, though I worked grubs hard too. I scattered a bunch of drum in shallow waters, hooked my channel and that's about all for tonight. Looking forward to your posts, ideas and suggestions. All the best, Rod McC
Al Agnew Posted June 30, 2012 Posted June 30, 2012 The lower Meramec is fickle at best when it comes to bass fishing. You might go another evening, do the same things, and catch some nice fish.
Members RodMcC Posted July 3, 2012 Author Members Posted July 3, 2012 That's the plan. The water looked pretty decent, so I'll keep plugging. As I mentioned, it's 5 minutes from the house, so it's virtually a no-brainer. We'll see.
Smalliebigs Posted July 4, 2012 Posted July 4, 2012 Rod, Al is soo correct one day or even one hour different and the results can be vastly different. Allenton access has some great water around it, but it is upstream and downstream unfortunately and with these low levels even a jet is sketchy right now. Take advantage of the extreme low water levels and get down in the river channel and explore. When the water comes back up you will have some good ideas of where to hit. there are some nice fish in that area as Al said and even some very nice Smallmouth, upstream to Pacific Paliisades I have caught some really nice Spotted Basss. IMO the bass specificly school up there more than they do upstream and when you catch them right you hit the jack pot but, that jack pot dosen't come up very often. An 18 inch Channel on top water is cool in my book....you'll get into them there if you keep at it. I have a good friend who says if you can catch fish on the lower Meramec you can catch fish anywhwere and I think he's right. Like Al said the evening bite is king on the lower Mec......throw some big, agressive topwater baits in the right spot and you might get a big suprise.
Hog Wally Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Tried that stretch this morning with my brother never been below palisades It was awesome looking clean water Caught 2 walleye and a white at first riffle from ramp went on to catch alot of smallies and kentuckies. Numbers but no sizes. Caught biggest drum ever 14 lbs All in all I give that stretch ( from allenton to palisades) a 7 on scale of ten Too be able to catch Walleye in sight of the boat ramp almost boosts it to a 8

Did you catch any hybrid Smallie/spots? "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Hog Wally Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Nothing over 13" One hybrid looking strange smallie thing what's that all about ?
Mitch f Posted July 5, 2012 Posted July 5, 2012 Nothing over 13" One hybrid looking strange smallie thing what's that all about ? That area up to River Round is full of Smallie/spot hybrids. I guess the smallies figure If you can't be with the one you love, love the one your with! "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Hog Wally Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I guess the water to be 10 degrees warmer down there than up by my usual stomping grounds. I can say that it was some beautiful walleye water they were probably too hot and full moon also. Two I caught were legal but they are still freely swimming there
Haris122 Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Rod, you had any luck at Allenton since then? And did you do it fishing from shore or from boat?
