Camdenton, Mo. —

“What on earth – it’s a stupid walleye”, my bass tournament partner exclaimed, reeling in his fish, “and it bit a spinnerbait!” This incident happened during a tournament 36 years ago on Lake Shelbyville in central Illinois.

It seemed an inconsequential accident at the time. However, walleye were native to the Kaskaskia River system so encounters like this occurred in both the river and the lake. The unusual part was how hard the fish attacked a spinnerbait with chrome-colored Colorado blades.

I've caught several on my homemade twin spin, which I'm almost never fishing more than a couple of feet under the surface. Caught one about six pounds on lower Black River on it.

I've caught them on BSL that way. Knocked the snot out of it.

I have caught them on twin spins, too, Al.

A spinnerbait trolled slowly on leadcore has been a hot technique in timber for over a year now on the tournamrent trail. I have yet to make it work, but last year was an odd year for "suspending" fish.

its not unusual at all, I catch my limit on fellows lake with a white spinner. What I do is take off the skirt and put a worm on it. They hit it real hard!
