When Fishing/hiking, Do You Carry A Handgun?

And there it is the douche bag quote of the thread.

Yours or the one from CF? I think CF is spot on. Anyone who thinks that carrying concealed is going to help in a "need it now" situation isn't aware of a lot of things. If someone has a gun trained on you, can you draw yours and fire before they squeeze one off? The answer is no.

Really the only time I carry on the river is during trapping season but one bonus of carrying on the river would be the ability to shoot armadillos, so shoot them if you see them. They are the only animal I kill indiscriminately that I don't use once they are dead, but they are like feral hogs once you get them in your yard (or campground) they tear things up. Al, if i had a dime for everytime I have seen people freak out at the site of a snake I would be rich. The only snake known for attacking people luckily doesnt live here ( balck mamba ). People seem to fear things they do not understand and others fear just life, if having a safety blanket on them makes them feel better so be it.

To the poster that said alot of these conversations end up in a political, liberal vs. conservative argument, I couldn't agree more.

I am on a number of other fishing sites that are very loosely moderated and almost anything goes. But the thing they have in

common is they all tell you to leave your politics and your religion at home. There are other sites for that.

What began as a conversation about who carries (or not) and why de-generated into an argument about Obama, Romney, Ryan, Clint,

whose fault it is the eeconomy is bad, and on and on.

Because the thing about arguing politics is you're almost never gonna change someones mind so all it ends up being is venting.

I'm waiting for the day somebody posts about fishing line and we end up arguing about abortion.

About snakes, I dont freak at all of them, but for some reason water mocassins scare me. The one I saw two weeks ago was on a gravel road and I was in my car and stopped to look at it. No I didnt get out of the car and it still scared me even tho it didn't do anything except sit there and eventually slither away. I did think about running it over to kill it, but then decided it was just being a snake and wasn't doing anything to me so I didnt do anything to it.

I do wonder something though about the folks who carry guns on the rivers because of snakes. The snake is lets say 15 feet away and my question is can you hit it with a handgun ? On the news and from a lot of law enforcement types I know, there are an awful lot of folks with guns who can't hit a human at 15 feet let alone a target that is perhaps 2 inches wide. Particularly if its moving at all, could you hit it ?

But if Clint Eastwood were going hiking or fishing in the backwoods of the Ozarks would he be carrying a firearms? Of course! Possibly either his old S&W Model 29 in .44 Mag (Dirty Harry) or one of the many varieties of single action handguns from the westerns, or maybe the Sharps rifle from Outlaw Josey Wales or he might just beat them half to death (any which way but loose series). :have-a-nice-day:

If he was to carry, you would never know about. He was never one to brag. And he would have never pulled it until absolutely necessary. Not like some here just itching to show you their superiority in fire power. As long as they get first pull.

Larry i doubt most could. To be honest if a snake is going the way you are its because thats the way he was going. Cottons are curious as are most pitvipers or more to say they see the heat signature and want to investigate it. But they can also tell when a prey item is to big and will turn off. Truthfully I have collected thousands of snakes in the wild and even with that type of action few tried to bite me. You really have to apply pressure to them to instigate a bite and thats out of fear of being eaten. Best thing is leave them alone they are doing us a great service by keeping rodents in check.
