Weve all seen this post before, Im heading down to try to fish the white for afew days and had afew questions. 1 i have a triton 18' walkthru with a 150 on it, to big? I take it on tanneycomo and bull shoals but i really enjoy the lower unit i have and dont want to buy a new 1, what is the average depth, im sure there are afew "spots" that are tricky and areas to avoid but overall would it be ok? 2 where is a good place to stay? I dont need 5 stars but i prefer running water. Thanks in advance looking to go in late sept early oct.

If you run a 150 on the White river you better have your mechanic on speed dial. There are a few deep holes, but there are a heck of a lot more shallow stretches. The White is more of a jon boat/drift boat type river than Taney is. I use a 25 hp, but I would say most people have 15's, and there are still plenty of places to tear up a prop at normal flows. This is all my opinion, of course. There are people on here who have a lot more knowledge of the river than I do. I always camp when I'm there, but I hear Gaston's is nice.

Leave the big boat at home. Even at high flows this is an extremely demanding river to navigate, therein lies it's attraction to many of us. By all means go but please hire a guide. After a couple of days on the water you will know just what I'm talking about.

I don't have much experience at all on the White so this is strictly a first person experience and not gospel but I put my 16' aluminum with a 60hp Merc on it last March and we did alright but we strictly stuck to the deeper holes (right around white hole). If you're really wanting to fish a bigger portion of the river you'll want something that can get in skinny water and no way I'd put a nice bass boat on there. Even in the deeper holes there are big rocks just waiting to take a big bite out of your gel coat.

That is way too much boat for the White. There is no average depth. They bounce the river level up and down all day. There is a generation prediction but it does not mean much.

With the levels they COE has ran latly I doubt you can get away from the ramp. I have ran a 90Hp on the river but only when they had 6 untis on line and felt 100% sure they would run the water. But I do have two jon boats for the river now! a 22 ft aluminum with a 9.9 for this low water all summer long and if they are running a unit 20 ft Shawnee with a 20HP. and yep I once had a 25HP Yamaha and had to put gears int he lower unti twice!! So even smaller motors get crushed on the river.
