Mitch f Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 But anyway, I think it'll be pretty interesting to see what MDC's learned in the past couple years regarding smallmouth harvest and movements...and hopefully it'll translate into better management in the future. Exactly, it was exciting to me to see the seasonal movement of the smallmouth more than anything. One tagged fish I caught last year traveled around 40 miles or more. I've always hated to see people take pot shots at something (not that you have Laker67) without offering up any ideas themselves. Not that they're perfect but with all the crap coming from all the special interests in this state, The MDC has done a good job in my book. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
laker67 Posted September 4, 2012 Posted September 4, 2012 When i say that I am a huge supporter of mdc's efforts, I have evidence to back it up. I was born and raised here at loz, lived in camden county my entire life, except for the 4 years of military. I grew up in a hunting and fishing family. Back in the sixty's, catching a 15 inch bass was rare, catching crappie over 10 inches was rare, seeing a deer when you went hunting was even rarer. I have grow up watching mdc make tremendous improvements in my outdoor activities. Trout fishing at lake taneycomo was greatly enhanced by the intro of brown trout in the 80's. They have turned it back into a world class fishery. Even though I don't fish rivers much, I know of the improvements to those areas. They have made access to rivers and streams for public use. Back in the day, knowing a landowner to gain access was critical. I am certainly not smart enough to know about the studies and research that goes on, but it is has made tremendous strides in the improvements that I have witnessed in my lifetime. I may be in favor of certain issues more than others, but I know that mdc is careful and calculating in changes they inact. And things that I would like to see may never occur in my lifetime. But that's ok because I have witnessed many overall improvements in the past 50 years. Those improvements have made my outdoor activities the best that they could possibly be.
Dan Kreher Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 Per Project Lead John Ackerson at MDC, their staff was meeting this week to discuss both the release of the final survey results as well as Year 1 results of the 5-stream reward tagging study. Angler survey report going through final editing. Should hear more on this soon.
cwc87 Posted September 14, 2012 Author Posted September 14, 2012 Awesome Dan thanks for the update. Now let the rains continue to keep the giggers off the water.
Greasy B Posted September 15, 2012 Posted September 15, 2012 Now let the rains continue to keep the giggers off the water. How sad that this comment is so true. While we all anxiously await the results from this study the fate of our beloved Smallmouth fisheries depends on low water levels keeping low life poachers off the rivers. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw.
