exiledguide Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 mic, I got a St Croix Premier 5 1/2 ft ultra light fast action I throw my 1/32oz jigs with it for bluegill really like it I don't know how it would work for heavier jigheads It's rated to 3/16oz. I bought it to throw 1/32 0z jighead with a #8 hook and !" power wiggler or !" gulp alive fish fry and it gets the job done for me. I've been told I needed a longer rod to throw that size jig but it seems to get the jig to where the fish are. That also was my lure of choice when I caught trout below Carpenter dam on Lake Catherine in Arkansas, the power wiggler, I didn't find gulp alive until I moved back to Missouri.
Ham Posted December 8, 2012 Posted December 8, 2012 I like the St Croix Premiers line just fine. I have fished with my Dad's 6' Light. It was very sensitive, but I really think it would struggle to throw the 1/32 oz stuff. I apparently have a moral aversion to rods listed as UL and rods under 6 foot. I had a couple of St Croix Premier UL rods in 5 foot and 5'6". They just felt like stubby little toy rods.I sold them to a friend and he is quite happy witht hem for trout. I enjoy my 6'6" ML Premier a lot. It is a constant on my creek smallie trips. I had a medium and sold it. I just wasn't using it much. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. exiledguide Posted December 9, 2012 Posted December 9, 2012 Every one has there preferences, I throw a 5ft 9in. Falcon for stream smallmouth and it handles !/32 oz to 1/4 oz jigheads built on #2 up to 3/0 hooks with 3 or 4' grubs or 4 to six inch worms and it handles crankbaits and topwaters well but I have to admit it not stiff enough for any but thesmallest spinnerbaits. I only wade when I stream fish so I'm limited to one rod.
mic Posted December 10, 2012 Author Posted December 10, 2012 Thanks everyone for your input. I haven't held one yet, but I'm going to give a Fenwick Elite Smallmouth ML a try. I'm trying to make one rod do the work of three. That means it isn't going to be great at everything. This is the only one I can find that is a ML and rated for 1/16th (vrs 1/8). In theory, I can use it for small spinners, jig and floats, and setting the hook on small texas rigged plastics. Once I get my hands on one, all let you know. http://www.fenwickfishing.com/prod.php?k=472010&sk=472009&p=PURESMS632MH-F%20%281253042%29#ESMS69ML-F%20%281238597%29
