Wayne SW/MO Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Where do they get the water to refill the lakes? If we're going to have real renewable energy that works full time they had better dam the river up. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Greasy B Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 Makes you wonder what our transportation system would look like if the railroads infrastructure was subsidized to the degree the barge and trucking industry's is? His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 You mean those old things that arrived on time rain or shine? Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
exiledguide Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 You mean those old things that arrived on time rain or shine? Wayne you have got to be joking. One of the last bid runs I had was a Poseyville Indiana turn to meet Lexington Ky and take those loads to Dupo IL railyard to go on the train for Mesquite Tex (that was the Dallas Hub and pick up two Mesquite loads for Earth City MO. I was scheduled an 8and 1/2 hour day The train was scheduled in an hour before I arrived and Monday was the only day of the week the train was there and by Friday I usualy had used up so many available hours that I had to work in in the city to keep from going over the 60 hour weekly limit. But the good side was I figured I made 15 hours a week overtime at time and a half siting on my butt waiting for a train, about an extra $20,000 for the year. And that was just one train. Next time we will talk about how you couldn't put a trailer on a train in Spokane Washington and get it past Kansa City, Mo on the rails....
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 No kidding. When the RR's were important they did run on time. My grandpa was ticket master at KC for many yaers and I know back then being on time was important. I have no idea what it's like today, but I wish I could still jump on a sleeper and go on a long trip in comfort. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
exiledguide Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 The origonal subject was about draining Mark Twain I think the answer lies in the great lakes a number of years ago during drought times the proposal was to drain water from the great lakes through Lake Michigan but it was shot down by the not only Illinois but all the other great lakes states claiming it would hurt commerce on the lakes and rivers...........I don't know if that is being consiered today but it would seem you could drop the great lakes and get a lot of water in the Miss system I know when they had flooding in Chicago in the past they released more than the agreed upon amount...........

I retired in 97 Wayne but the last time I talked to anyone about it things don't change much. As far as jumping on a sleeper, I always had a fantasy of riding in a sleeper car from NY to LA with Jayne Mansfield.......and Kim Novack........and Elizabeth Taylor and if you never road on a Army Troop train in the early 60s taking a day and a half from Camp McCoy Wisconsin to Union Station in St Louis you have don't know what fun is.......
Wayne SW/MO Posted December 20, 2012 Posted December 20, 2012 I rode a troop train from Lackland AFB to Denver. It was quite an experience. Most of the GI's were army on the way to Fort Carson, with quite a few airmen going to Lowry AFB. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
Members 713lefty Posted December 29, 2012 Members Posted December 29, 2012 If the water drops the photography opportunities abound. I may now know why the fish were there and not somewhere else......OH boy. Now if we can only get them to hold the water level at MTL during the spawn...... A possible bargaining chip....
