mic Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 I'm going to try out some egg flies this year. What are your favorite patterns or colors? Also, I suck at tying them right now. Besides practice are there any tips?
timsfly Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Lt. Roe, apricot supreme, Oregon cheese, and egg, are my favorites, I like to put a red dot in some of them, I also tie a few with 5 or 6 colors (scrambled egg) with a red speck. stlfisher Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 The pink lady (a pink/orange color) Oregan Cheese with a red dot. Orange Estaz on a hook.
Greasy B Posted December 21, 2012 Posted December 21, 2012 Almost always Oregon cheese or Oregon cheese with a pink eye. I think the most important thing is keeping the bulk down, as with all flies less is best. I was going to make comment about how my eggs work best when their tied on 1/80th or 1/100th jig hooks and they also work best when they’re a little disheveled, but what you have with that arrangement is basically a cross between a miracle fly and a Y2k bug. His father touches the Claw in spite of Kevin's warnings and breaks two legs just as a thunderstorm tears the house apart. Kevin runs away with the Claw. He becomes captain of the Greasy Bastard, a small ship carrying rubber goods between England and Burma. Michael Palin, Terry Jones, 1974

Wayne SW/MO Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 My advice, don't get too hung up on perfect appearance. Today's release is tomorrows gift to another fisherman.
laker67 Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 My advice, don't get too hung up on perfect appearance. Agreed, presentation is way better than color or appearance. Original eggs were fur bugs. The egg was created when someone trimmed up the fur bug. Concentrate on keeping it on the bottom and you will catch fish.
Jeff Tief Posted December 22, 2012 Posted December 22, 2012 I rarely tie the round egg pattern and tie a fur bug in the colors Tim mentioned.Wife, Susie tears them up on the "egg' color and the apricot supreme;so much that I sometimes go to these patterns to save face. She has a better hook ratio wth the fur bug as more of the hook point is exposed than on some of the glo-bug eggs I tied. Then again I'm not that great of fly tier
