Bird Watcher Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 haha! Just saw this. We had the black eyed peas and Kale with ham and bacon. The wife says the black eyed peas are for luck and the Kale is for money. She always has some type of greens on New years.
exiledguide Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 You guys have been watching too many cooking shows! LOL! You are probably are right, I didn't get this waistline watching DIY network. But look at the bright side, I got a new Gumbo pot for Christmas.
BilletHead Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 Yes Duane the good old TV has had an impact on our food intake. Cooking shows have been on a long time though. I remember being home from school sick and watching the galloping gourmet on daytime TV. Maybe some Julia Child. Good grief I am old. Our household cooking sometimes gets into a rut. Comfort food is the best especially some meat beat to a pulp like canada goose tenderized. Chicken fried with mashed taters and goose gravy. Side of veggies to make it healthy. I still cannot beleve I have eaten some kale and thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Bird Watcher I will have money in the new year. This thread makes me more hungry to the minute but Mrs. BilletHead has informed me we have bookoos leftovers from company to be cleaned up. Actually though there is a pot of brown beans going on too, BilletHead "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" Members creekin bassnerd Posted January 2, 2013 Members Posted January 2, 2013 We stuffed ourselves with fried hog jowl, black eyed peas, fried cabbage, fried tators, corn bread, and cucumber salad...Jan 1st is easily my favorite meal of the year.
ness Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Billett -- looks darn good! Like the sound of that sauce. I've never really cared for black-eyed peas -- dirt is a pretty good way to describe the taste. How'd your wife fix the kale? I think I see some bacon in there...I don't remember ever eating it, but I grow and eat Swiss chard -- always prepared pretty simply with either chicken broth, white wine, Parmesan cheese, balsamic vinegar, bacon or a combination. We had baked focaccia with vine-ripened tomato puree, smoke-cured spicy pork sausage dressed with soft Italian cheese, monosodium glutamate, dextrose, sodium benzoate and lecithin as an emulsifier ala Totino's. BilletHead Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 Ness here is the recipie Pat used. http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/anne-burrell/sauteed-kale-recipe/index.html A bit different because we only had one type of kale and no chicken stock (used water) Plus she added some diced onions. A bit modifed from the called for stuff but very tasty. We will be eating this more often for sure. Justin Spencer Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Had duck dressing, asparagus and black eyed peas. Didn't pay much attention, but heard the girls talking about the peas being in a bag, not dry, or canned. They were very good think they came from a natural foods store. You are right Billet, kale is good, my wife buys all kinds of things I'm not sure about, but it usually turns out pretty good, and healthy to boot. I have a hard time watching Ann Burrell's show -- it's like chewing foil for me. But... my channel surfing will come to a screeching halt for Giada, especially when she's whisking polenta in a peasant shirt. John
